Should You be a Vegetarian?

Because I haven't eaten meat for 35 years, I've had people ask me if they should be vegetarian. If your blood type is A, like mine, you definitely shouldn't eat animal products. If you are an O you need meat. If you are a B, you need some meat. Often our bodies tell us what foods are best for us. For instance, I've always been attracted to peanuts. If I had a dish of mixed nuts I'd eat all the peanuts and toss the cashews. When young, I'd feel guilty because I'd heard peanuts had aflatoxin, which is a mold. After research was done on eating for your blood type, I realized peanuts were very beneficial to me. Books have since been written on this and I use the above book by Dr. Peter D'Adamo. It covers all four blood types or you can buy just a little book on your blood type.

If you are trying to lose weight and can't, you are most likely eating foods that are not acceptable to your blood type. The father of my children was an O blood type. O's absolutely thrive on meat. I'm an A and should stay as far away from meat as I can. When the kids were young, we'd get a sitter once a week and go out for dinner. He would order a big thick steak and want me to eat one too. I remember this clearly. When we got home, he was bursting with energy and I was miserably sick. I said, "I think meat poison's me," He laughed and said we need meat and his proof was, he ate it every day. We were both right. He did need the meat but it poisoned me.

If you don't know your blood type, you can get that information free if you "donate" blood or you can visit one of those quick-care units and the doctor will order lab work for a small fee. I just found out you can do self-testing for a reasonable fee. North American Pharmacal, Inc. will distribute "Home Blood Type Testing Kits."

Are any of you familiar with eating for your blood type?

  1. I admit I never heard of this. This makes sense to me. My type is AB and I feel best without animal products but once in a while it's a steak or some one is getting hurt. My doctor use to say I must need it or I wouldn't crave it like that. Seems he was way before his time, huh?

  2. I had never head of this, no idea what myh blood type is, but....I eat meat, I mean I EAT MEAT. I can't imagine life without it. I need to look into this.

  3. I'm A.
I do eat meat, but not that much. I feel sick if I have too much. My daughter is also A. But my husband has no clue what he is.

  4. I had heard of this. I'm type A and rarely eat meat, that is almost never. :) I eat what my body tells me through cravings and it's worked for quite a while now, but it's pretty much veggies, some pasta and rice, and fruit, of course. Once in a blue moon I really crave a hamburger, but Never steak, and my burger is usually grass fed or bison. I almost get ill walking through the meat section. It feels ghoulish now.

  5. i've heard of it but never researched or read about it. So what about an AB type like I am?

  7. I've been a strict vegetarian for over a year now. I feel fine, but I sure do need to know if it's right for me. I've never known my blood type, so now I guess I should find that out.

Thanks for the info, I'll check out the book!

  8. I found this book about ten years ago and it really helped with my migraines. This was before they were really bad. And then I got married ~ and my husband didn't like eating on the diet. And HE was very stressful and I got too sick to keep it up. It is more expensive to eat well. In addition to getting rid of the meat, I found it really important to get do away with all of the white flour and that is so hard. The only way I could really thrive on the diet was to stick to it 100%. Right now my mom is cooking for me and she doesn't have the money or the will to cook like that. Besides my step-dad wouldn't eat that way. So, I cull as much as I can. I haven't had beef or pork in ten years. I know that has helped enormously. I think if you can find your biggest food offenders and get rid of them it will really help, and that book is like a road map. For me, it was a blessing.

  9. Welcome back - thought you'd dropped off the face of the earth!

I believe your body tells you what it needs (like your craving for peanuts). But the trick is to identify the source of the craving - if it's something sweet, instead of gorging on chocolate, it may mean you need complex carbs for energy or something like that.

The only danger is to blindly follow what someone else is evangelising just because it works for them!!

    Have a great day!

  10. Texwisgirl and Gigglesand guns : I'm including you 2 together because you're both AB. I didn't mention AB because it's rare (you raries!!) 2 to 5 % of the population. I'll write just a little of what it says in the book. "It's complex. It doesn't fit comfortably into any of the other categories. Multiple antigens make Type AB sometimes A-like, sometimes B-like and sometimes a fusion of both .... kind of a blood type centaur.

Like A's you don't produce enough stomach acid to digest too much animal protein. Stay away from chicken, like the B's. You are stronger and more active than the A's.

Type AB's need some meat protein, especially the kinds of meat that represent your B-like heritage....lamb, mutton, rabbit and turkey instead of beef." etc... etc. The book goes through all the food groups and explains what you should be eating.

This is very interesting to me. I don't think I've known AB's before. Do either of you have any difficulty with food selection and do you feel well with the foods you eat?

  11. Mybabyjohn : If you are comfortable eating a lot of meat, it must mean you are blood type O.

Teresa and Ruth : You are both A's. Book says "you are better eating no meat as there is no beneficial group but there are 3 neutral items ... chicken, cornish hens and turkey. All the rest of animal products you should avoid." Reason.... A's don't produce much stomach acid.

  12. Kitty : If you feel good as a vegetarian all this time, you are probably an A, wouldn't you think?

Kris : That might be a good idea. I tried totally raw for over a year and darn near killed myself. I need both cooked and raw and now I'm back on track again.

Robin : Too bad you can"t stay on the strict A diet. When my husband was alive I cooked 2 complete meals because he was an O too and We couldn't eat the same at all. I was macrobiotic then and that is a really good A diet. If we (A"s) eat any bread it's best to eat sprouted bread like Essene or Ezekial. We can eat a lot of fish.... mostly avoid the shellfish. I've been cleansing so much that I have to build now and I eat salmon several times a week. Hope your headaches are better.

Red : I feel like I fell off the earth. I got carried away with cleaning the yard and planting new flowers. When I came in the house, I was too tired to open the computer. Now it's raining every day so it keeps me in. Yeah, we can't give into the candy cravings, although raw Cacao is supposed to be good for you an a good source of magnesium.

Thank you, dear bloggy friends for the meaningful comments. Manzanita

  13. I am blood type A+.

I tried being a vegetarian for a year, but disliked it. I now eat a well balanced meal, and love BBQ steak once a week.

  14. I'm an AB which explains my need for a (very) small steak with a huge load of veggies.

  15. I read about this 'diet'. I don't eat a lot of meat and I'm also type A. I only eat the odd piece of chicken because Hubby wants meat (he's type 'O') I actually don't even like steak, pork or lamb - yeurgh.
This book is very good (I nosed at it in the bookshop)and I agree with eating what is right for your body.
Good post. Enjoyed it. Thank you.

  16. Very interesting Manzanita, I think I'm A, and have meat once or twice a week. Hubby is O and is happier not having much meat. We have lots of legumes and vegies. I'm eating less bread recently and feel better, also eating more raw oats in my muesli which seems to agree with me. Now you're back, and I'm headed off for a while with little internet access. I'll see you when I get back :) Sue

  17. I may need to get that book. I know when I grew up my mom always cooked lots of beef and a lot of times I felt so sick afterwards.

  18. I never knew about this but it sure explains a lot. I'm type A. I could eat a boatload of veg and am a bit of a chicken-holic but when I eat a big steak I feel horrible after. The funny thing is, hubby is also A (although he's neg and I'm pos) and he never complains after eating any kind of meat... Not even a whopping steak. I think I need to get this book. Thanks for sharing!

Newly following from the Friday hop. Stop on by and say hello sometime!

  19. I have read about this before. I am seriously going to look and see what type of blood I have... I think B. If so, I guess I eat correctly for my type.

What an informative post, but then, you always have very informative posts. Thanks Manzanita!!

  20. How interesting! I've never heard of this before, but it is quite intriguing. I'm B- and definitely feel better if I go light on the meats. (But with my disposition, I think I should've been a B+ !)

  21. Read that book when I worked at Whole Foods. I'm type A, but living with a guy that raises cattle..Uuuggh! I really try to limit my meat. Veggies and fruit..yummy! I'm just now able to post comments. Gosh it was so hard to read and not be able to put in my two cents worth...

  22. OMFG! You're f**king kidding me? I have never heard of this before! I do believe I'm A positive. And there are times when I really don't feel like eating meat, but do anyway because I don't want to be picky in front of the kids (kids learn from example, well mine do at least). I seriously could live without meat. I do occasionally enjoy a nice steak, but I don't crave it. My husband does, and he's O!! WOW, and I have been trying to lose weight (I have lost it but it hasn't been easy).

Toss those cashews my way, please. Thank you. And pecans. Love pecans.

I have to check this out! Wow, what an eye opener!

  23. My mom has that book and just loves it. I'm an O, but I have to admit that when I eat beef...it kills my tummy. I am cool with other meats though. I am dropping by from Friday Follow 40 and Over. I hope you can drop by and say hello too.

  24. Gigi : If your diet agrees with you is all that is important. I'm glad you feel well.

River : I thought AB's were so rare. You're the 3rd one in this post. :)

Facing 50 : You and hubby are the same as we were. If you understand what you need to eat, it works.

Sue : As long as what you eat agrees with you is all that is important. Enjoy your time off. I'm doing a lot of outdoor work right now.

Ruth : Good idea. Most A's feel better without meat, although some are saying (on this post) that they are a's and eating meat and feel well.

  25. Mrs. B. : Thanks for stopping. Let me know if this works for you.

Terry : Thanks. You always are on top of your health. My followers is off so I didn't join your blog hop this weekend. Hope I don't lose them.

Susan : You are a B plus. I'd say an A but then you'd be in a different category. :)

Turquoisemoon : I'm happy for you because you seem to have a good one.
Maybe you are working around the meat thing. My 2nd husband and I did. He was an O too. Both were.

Irene : Most a's that I know don't need meat but a few say they eat it and feel well. Good luck if you change your diet somewhat.

Kalea Kane : Thanks for stopping. Evidently you have found the diet that fits you and that's what is important. We all get to know our own bodies. :)

  26. Manzi: I have been a vegetarian for years, and I don't even know my blood type. I no longer have any desire for meat, and I am much healthier.

  27. I'm type O and lately I've been craving meat. More so than 10 or even 20 years ago. Definitely going to check this book out. Thanks, Manzi.

  28. Ah, now I can comment easily though your followers still seem to me MIA. Am glad it worked partially at least.
I am a type A--maybe that is why the chicken episode hit me so hard.LOL
Thanks for the info, it does make sense.

  29. Yes! My friend showed me a blood type book and I thought it was interesting. I'm O negative and although I enjoy vegetarian meals, I do need my meat. :-)

  30. I have been trying to comment on this post for ages. haha maybe this time!! :)

I'm O+. I miss meat if I don't have it but it can make me feel awfully bloated at times. I think I need to eat more fruit.

  31. JJ : Good for you. Get those patriotic veggie burgers ready for the weekend grill.

Su-ieee : Evidently you, as an O, have enough stomach acid to thrive on meat. O's have the oldest ancestors when they ate mostly meat. A's are from agrarian ancestors and have lost some of their stomach acid (by this time.)

Patti : Thank you so much for the help. My followers came back and I hope they stay.

Jennifer : Yes you do and I hope you have a some good old grilled meat this Memorial day week end. :) Enjoy

Niki : I've been going cuckoo with this Google deficiency. I hope it's ends.

  32. I never thought about eating according to blood type before. I do find that as I get older, eating smaller portions of red meat works better for me. An interesting read! Julie
