Many Ballroom dancers practice Yoga poses because it adds flexibility and calms the mind.
Every Ballroom Competition is a stressful day with dancers adrenals bouncing up and down. To be able to find a quiet corner in-between dances, and lose one's self in a peaceful meditation can calm the frantic stage fright and attract the judges eye for a higher score.
Judges score on a whole raft of personal traits beside the quality of the dance. They are good at spotting the nervous, frantic, worried dancers and they tend to score them accordingly. So, the trick is to fool the judges and keep that calm exterior vibrating "winner."

ReplyDeleteI have absolutely zero flexibility so this was like watching gymnastics for me - it looked ever so difficult! But I totally appreciate the need to sit in a quiet place somewhere and to reflect and meditate in peace! Take care

DeleteI am laughing with you at "Reebok, the new type of yoga" My daughter has been a yoga teacher with what seems like forever. She has always maintained a slender flexible body although her job as a lawyer, commits her to sitting in front of a computer, much of the time. She is very diligent with her daily practice. Much more so than I am and it shows.
It makes sense. I've been doing that bending down pose lately, but it's to pick up pebbles and rocks in the veggies patches I've been digging for the Mama. LOL

DeleteI have noticed that people who do yoga are calmer and slimmer. Can't beat that, I guess.
I have zero flexibility too, but my daughter and grand daughter have been doing yoga for years. Both were dancers in the past, daughter Jazz Ballet and grand daughter Ballet. I know that if I find a suitable yoga class I can regain some flexibility, but there are so many different styles of yoga, I wouldn't know where to start.

DeleteIt's wonderful that your kids and grandkids are so flexible and good dancers. You must be very proud of them. I know how you feel too, about entering a class if you feel really stiff. Why don't you get a beginners DVD and go through the poses at home and that will get you limber and then you would feel comfortable in any yoga class. I have a couple of DVD and I like doing it at home but in class a teacher can correct your mistakes. Just something to think about.
I should have started yoga at a younger age, since I didn't I now do a couple of yoga things that are on our Wii. I have zero balance so it does help with that... plus the flexibility.

Oh how I wish there were Yoga classes near by. Closest is a 3 hour round trip. I need it for flexibility but I am just not self motivated enough to do it on my own. I love the group setting.

I love to do yoga. I have been terrible with my practice. When my inner ear thing flared up and my balance went, I just quit doing yoga altogether. (I lost 70% of my inner ear function in both ears. I went to rehab for a while, but my progress was not good due to my chronic and severe migraines. So, my doctor quit the sessions.) For a long time, just walking was tough. I am starting to get my balance back and am starting to incorporate other exercise into my daily routine, but I have not brought yoga back. I am really hoping someday...

Yeah, yoga is so healing too. My daughter has been a teacher for a very long time and she teaches some medical yoga too for certain diseases.
I love doing yoga. I try to do some yoga and meditation on a regular basis. It helps me to connect to the world in a healthy way. It has many benefits. Not just one.

Hi Manzanita .. sadly I'm stuck and always have been fairly inflexible .. I'm into Pilates now and getting some QiGong .. and some Tai Chi .. but long way to exercise out those inflexible muscles .. I'm starting!

ReplyDeleteI know, I've stiffened up since I stopped dancing and my exercise program often has big gaps and holes. I think Tai Chi is wonderful. Good for you. I used to practice it every morning but got out of that habit too and now I've forgotten most of the forms.
At least the dog makes me walk every day.
Looks like you have to be really thin to do those poses. Wow! They are so flexible!
