All my life I've had gardens, both veggies and flowers. I learned at a very young age to plant with the Moon. I plant root vegetables in the Moon's 3rd quarter but I missed it this year so I thought, what the heck, I'll plant in the 1st. No good. The daikon bolted already, meaning all tops and no bottoms. Another reminder that we must respect and live with nature.

Good job on keeping your shedule on a lunar calendar. I've been a farm hand for 5 years but I'm terrible at staying motivated for my own garden. Keeping track of the phases of the moon might help.

Your greenhouse is gorgeous. What kind of fruit trees? The Husband and I built short and small veggie boxes for the Mama. That was so fun. Soon, I'll post photos of her backyard jungle growing back in. :-)

DeleteSorry, I didn't answer what kind of fruit trees. I planted 5 trees. 2 peach, a plum, cherry and apple. I know all those fruits grow fairly well in Mt. because I've had them before. In fact I've grown the juciest, sweetest peaches that you have to eat standing over the sink or the juice runs down your arm.
I should've said very, very short--no low--boxes. They're only a foot higher off the ground, so she doesn't bend as low from her bench. :-)
DeleteI like your choices of fruit trees. I wonder if peaches could grow here, but then there's the farmer market. We're dreaming of putting in a fig tree in the front yard. No more room in the back.

DeleteHelena is so over-run with deer that you have to either plant in a greenhouse or have a very tall fence around your property. I love to watch the deer but they kill trees by striping bark and have the flowers for dessert.
And I didn't think the moon had much in the way of topsoil.

What a great greenhouse! I love that you plant trees and think about what that means. I think you'll probably live a lot longer than you ever expected. You've done the right things to have longevity.

DeleteNot only the fruit trees, last year I was really on a tree kick and I was playing around growing trees from seed. I have 3 small seedlings on my kitchen window sill by the sink so I don't forget about them.
Your greenhouse looks terrific. You'll be baking fresh fruit pies before you know it.

DeleteThis house sat vacant for around 7 years and it's been very dry seasons. Some of the trees suffered and I'm trying to bring them back.

DeleteYou are not late. In the mid-west we never planted our gardens until Memorial Day. But a greenhouse does offer 2 growing seasons. It snowed a couple of times and the inside of the GH stayed around 60.

I love your green house! and there's nothing wrong with planting trees at your age. You may not get the full benefit, but future generations will. I'm sure you'll get to see them reach adult size. I tried to plant according to the moon once, but things didn't work out.

DeleteI wonder what happened with your moon planting. It's when I don't consider the moon that things go awry. I hope I get to taste the cherries, plums, peaches. Apples, not so much. My neighborhood is full of apples and people are always trying to get rid of them.
Sudden change in circumstances meant moving away from that fabulous rich soil garden and everything I'd planted.

We can grow quite a lot of the fruit here but when I lived in Minneapolis, we just had apples and pears. Oh the pears were soooo good. It's really colder in MN and it must be more like PA.
I just LOVE your green house. I am so envious but hesitate getting one due to our high wind and tornado seasons.

DeleteI wish I could give you some of my room. This old house sits in the middle of 2 1/2 lots. It's so old it was grandfathered in and the house next door was the bunk house so these two lots are odd size. Way too much land for me to take care of. Reason I was so stiff this AM, yesterday I mowed and weed-whacked all day.
Hi there. What a gorgeous greenhouse you have, and look at all those lovely, healthy looking plants. I think it's wonderful that you are still planting trees!! We have apple blossom on our trees at the moment, and we're hoping that it will stay on the trees. Last year, for the first time in 15 years, we didn't have any apples at all. I know a lot of people that plant by the moon. It certainly seems a natural way of doing things.

DeleteYour yard is so beautiful with all your inviting-looking trees, bushes and flowers. I wonder why you didn't have apples. I bet you missed having them. Apricots grow well here BUT.... they blossom out early and if there is a cold snap afterward, I don't get any apricots, either.

DeleteThe 3rd phase of the Moon is for root veggies. It all ties in with astrology. My grandfather always planted with the Moon but didn't delve into the astrology part.

What an awesome Green House. I'm still rounding after a-z...with a thought...could you do a Flat Stanley Garden project that I could post, with a link here. It would be a nice way to teach kiddos a bit about the importance of gardening?

ReplyDeleteOh, your greenhouse looks lovely, so neat and cosy! For me, gardening is kind of a soul healing occupation, too! Though, we don't have a garden at the moment, but our indoor and terrace plants have started giving lush foliage and abudant blooms! Tropical plants, pink hibiscus, hoya, pelargonias, zephyrantheses, jasmin and large multicoloured gerberas.... yay! :)
