Alan's Song

Hey Bloggie Friends
Have any of you kitchen dancers (esp. Su-sieee and the husband) taken up dancing after A-Z?  My granddaughter, Ashly, wrote an excellent WALTZ song for beginners.  You can't lose the beat as the 1-2-3 literally shouts at you.  The song is written in old-timey country and called ALAN'S SONG. I made a short vid of Ashly washing Cody Dog so you can hear the song. (I haven't made a video for such a long time, I forgot how to add titles. )  Ha

Ashly wrote the song for me after Alan died.  I never expected to find a dancer in Montana with as much natural rhythm as Alan had. We danced every Sunday at a little Honkey Tonk that catered to excellent bands, not only country, but swing, blues and jazz. Alan had 10 years on me, but he was still the best swing dancer I had ever danced with. He had danced in competition during WW2 while he was in the Navy. Holy Moly, dancing with Alan was just plain fun. I haven't been out dancing socially since Alan died. My heart just isn't in it. But I still teach a little so at least I get my DANCE FIX. I think about social dancing and some day I may venture out again.

  1. Cody doesn't seem very impressed what so ever
Never saw such a machine with a lever
    And very nice song too

    1. Cody's only interested in what I put in her dish
Even then, more food she'd wish
The waltz is slow and count 1-2-3
Can't lose the rhythm, I see.

Thanks. Dogs like to take a bath by rolling in fish guts.

  3. I love the song. It reminds me of a polka waltz. It also makes me think of the Husband. :-) I'm impressed with Cody. She was very patient and calm about it all.

I thought of you with that song. Cody tolerated her bath, barely. Ha

  4. That's a lovely song. I'm so sorry for your pain, Manzanita. I'm glad for your good memories though. The song does have a good beat to follow.

    1. Kay,
The song is rather corny but dancers always look for the beat.

  6. Loved the song and the look in Cody's eyes. You could tell the dryer part let him know it was about over.
I am so sorry that you lost your wonderful dance partner but hope you do get back out there and once again do what you enjoy the most.

Cody has always been pretty good about baths but then she like to find some horse poop to roll in to cover up the bath smell. Ha... typical dog

  7. Dear Manzanita,

A wonderful song, a beautiful moment and treasured memories. Cody looks rather bemused by it all. I know that after Penny is bathed, she does the zippy dance all round the house.

May your heart that already dances to a merry tune, find you back where you belong, on the dance floor.

    In kindness and warm wishes,

    Your friend,

    Gary

Thank you for the sweet words.
I can see Penny dancing around after her bath. That bath is at a doggie bath place and Cody immediately goes to the door and wiggles and whines to get outta there... quick.

  8. How sweet that Ashly bathes Cody for you.... What a sweetheart she is and her voice mathches her personality.

Is that bath set up for Cody in your house?

    1. Terry,
No not in my house.... in this house, I barely have room for a bath for myself. It at a regular doggie wash. There are 3 little rooms and that meter is like a car wash thing, where you can select the shampoo, water, blower, etc and just keep sticking money in. Actually it's very reasonable but they do keep raising the price. It costs about 6 to 8 bucks, depending on how long I blow her. Better than doing a hairy dog in your home bath tub. Last time I did that, I had to get Rooter Router out. Ha

  9. Beautiful song. Beautiful girl. Beautiful dog (who can even stand having a bath).

What more could a wonderful woman want?

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

Ummm, let's see..... ya a dance partner would be nice. But good dancers are few and far between in Montana. But I get your point. I'm now happy with good health and my gardens.
Thanks, dear Bear.... Hope things are well in your part of the woods.

  10. Don't wait...go social dance now if you desire to...someday never comes, a wise man said in an old CCR song.

It would be fun but I can never find dance partners. This sounds bad but I can't dance with a poor partner. I can teach a bad dancer to be better but to social dance with them really hurts my body and it's no fun, either. I'd rather stay home and cultivate my garden, as Voltaire said.

  11. I made half-hearted plans to find some kind of dance activity, but so far haven't done anything solid. I got a bit down in the dumps and put everything aside in favour of sleep and reading. Now it just doesn't seem important, winter is closing in and I'm hibernating, unless I need groceries.

I feel like that in the winter too. I just like to snuggle in and get caught up on stuff. Even though you are more in the house, I hope you get cheery.

  12. Hi Manzanita .. I love the song - and so lovely to hear it here .. while reading briefly about Alan .. it does sound as though you had a glorious time dancing ... would love to dance, but it is just not one of my strengths .. even remotely ...

Cody is extraordinarily docile .. love the post ... and particularly that song and story .. cheers Hilary

I have plenty of other hobbies and interests to occupy my time, it just feel like a big void when your top priority one is missing. Pshaw, it's summer and time to grow little things in the garden.
Yes, Cody is usually a very good girl.

Cody's got so much hair he doesn't even look wet! :)

Cody DID have a lot of hair. I just shaved her for her summer doo. People now wonder what kind of a dog she is.

  14. I am so sorry that you do not dance anymore. I wish I could have just a little of your rhythm though, as I do not have much and you are so right, the rhythm of the music just jumps out at you.

I never listen to words of a song. They could be saying something terrible and I wouldn't notice. All I ever hear is the beat.
I bet you would enjoy dancing. In your last post, you know what you were saying..... perhaps you could find a whole new fun life if you went out dancing.

Tell me about it. At the ranch Cody goes over to the neighbor's pasture and rolls in cow poop and I'm sure you know the how green and soft and yucky that is. She comes back looking so proud of what she did. Her fur that is/was white gets completely green. Spare me.

  16. It seems like you posted this a while back on your blog.... maybe I am losing my mind, though. However, I don't think you shared as much of the back story on Alan that time. He sounds delightful. I am sorry that you lost your friend and dance partner:(

You are soooo right about that 1-2-3 timing in the song. I can't understand the words at all because of the hose and dryer (Washing Cody), but I can hear that beat plain as day. That would be an excellent waltz for any dancer that has difficulty keeping the beat, or just anyone who likes a waltz!

As for Cody - I can't believe hoe good he is about getting his bath. He doesn't shake even once. Whenever I bathe any of our dogs, I always get doused at least once. Such a good boy!!!

    1. I did post the song before, mostly as a song Ashly wrote for me but this time I really wanted to place emphasis on the solid 1-2-3 beat for beginner dancers. Alan wasn't a romantic boyfriend but a dance partner. Dance partners are more precious and harder to come by than romantic boyfriends. Haha This morning a female flamenco friend said they are starting up a folk dance group again and asked if I would come. I said no. I've never cared for folk dancing, although in a way, I suppose flamenco can be considered a folk dance.
