A few of my herbs |
A-Z Challenge
My theme is Herbs
Z is for
Zingiber
Officinale
Fooled Ya!
It's really Ginger but
try to find a good
"Z" herb.
Zingiber is a tropical plant found in E. Asia, Australia, India
and China.
I am a great fan of ginger, both in my cooking and in my
teas. I love the zippy bite of ginger that will mask the
bitter taste of some of the important herbs.
Aside from using it in cooking, it can be taken in a
tincture syrup or in capsule form.
Medical Uses:
Used for colitis, diverticulosis, gas, indigestion,
nausea, morning sickness, paralysis of the tongue,
hot flashes and as a colon clease
My mom used to give me Ginger Ale when I had an upset tummy. ;)
ReplyDelete'grats getting to Z! It was nice seeing a post everyday. :)
Have a great rest of the week!
Rosey
ReplyDeleteThanks and especially thanks for being a faithful follower, noteably on those boring letters where informations is scarce. WOW, it's only Wednesday and the finish line has been crossed.
Congrats from another A to Z blogger! Will aim to check back again :)

DeleteThank you and it is a pleasure to meet you.
Hi Manzanita - I thought you were going for ginger - still a good name to draw us in to Z. Lots of zests around ... Wonderful to see your herbs, books and some stores - how neat and tidy!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on giving us all that information on the different herbs ... cheers Hilary
Hilary
DeleteI guess I can't foo you. Ha I'm ready for a little rest, How about you? But yaaaaay .... we did it.
I was curious how you'd handle Z. Very clever. I've really enjoyed your A to Z topic. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteSeeing your shelves of herbs is impressive, as is your knowledge.
ReplyDeleteYour posts about natural healing has been so informative. I hope a book is in the offing.
See you 'round the bend.
Congrats on making it to the end. I should use more ginger.
ReplyDeleteThe Mama cooked with fresh ginger a lot. I just remembered that the Mama added lots of slices of ginger to bittermelon chicken soup. Heavenly. That may be why mine tastes differently.
ReplyDeleteWhooo-hooo! Congrats to completing another A to Z, Manzi! I had fun this year. And I think it has helped put a bit of writing discipline in me. :-)
Me too. I take Ginger every day for my arthritis--does wonders plus I have candied ginger for the rare upset tummy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing a really interesting A to Z.
Patti
DeleteYum candied ginger sounds like dessert. Last night I had cut up fresh ginger to steam with the veggies. It is a root for all occassions. Thanks for being a loyal A-Z supporter. It really keeps me going.
You made it, Mazanita!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
I learned a lot about herbs.
Julia
DeleteThank you for your support. It's great to have the support of one who is tapping their way into the hearts of millions. You go girl.
I have a feeling Ginger isn't even in my spice cabinet! I do have a lot of Italian spices, though, which says a lot about my cooking preferences!
ReplyDeleteStephanie
DeleteIt says you have good taste in your eating preference and I love Italian cooking too. Thank you for dropping in at my blog.
Gas you say, that could work at my bay. But doing something now that really works but nasty lol
ReplyDeletePat
DeleteI think we all know "gas" at some time in our lives. And that ain''t no gas. Sorry, but at the end of this challenge, I feel all run outta gas.
Congrats on making it to the end
ReplyDeleteHoly Ghost
DeleteThank you and thanks again for being such a loyal follower. I appreciate it.
I'm a big fan of ginger. Except ginger cats. Can you imagine, a cat made out of ginger.
ReplyDeleteHearty congrats, dear lady, on completing the alternative to the Alphabark Challenge, 2014! :)
Gary
Do they rhyme?
DeleteGary
DeleteThanks for the support during the challenge. We all had fun but always happy to see "the end." I know how you feel, too. Haha
Blue Grumpster and Gary.....As we all know, over at Rhyme Time all cats rhyme....Ginger cats and even garlic cats. hummm I wonder how a garlic cat would taste.
DeleteWHAT! You've never tried a garlic cat? CLICK! This one's on me. ;)
DeleteI love the cookies made of the real stuff
ReplyDeleteAdam.
DeleteWhen i was younger and could still eat the sweets, I absolutely loved the ginger cookies dunked in either coffee or milk. You have good ginger taste. ha
I am discovering more about ginger; I do like the taste of it when cooked in certain foods.
ReplyDeleteWTG for finishing the challenge! The posts I read about herbs were interesting and I did learn a lot of things I hadn't known before.

DeleteThanks for your support and I certainly enjoyed reading your posts. I can almost smell the sea air on your nautical posts.
Wow, you made it through. I have been bad about commenting lately.
ReplyDeleteGinger is good stuff. I like it a lot, especially the fresh stuff. It smells so good when you grate it. I just need to remember to flavor my meals with more of this good stuff and not just the 'go-to's' of garlic, herbs de provence or cracked black pepper.
Jasmine
DeleteThank you for your support. I know how busy you must be with your move. It's hard work and an emotional strain. I don't use a whole lot of spices either but I usually keep ginger in the fridge.
Ginger is one of my favourites too, in teas and in cooking. It's quite versatile adding zing to a lot of things. Great for digestion and the circulation too.
ReplyDeleteRiver
DeleteI agree on all your merits of ginger. Thank you for your loyal support and all your worthy comments. You have a store- house of herbal knowledge and I enjoyed reading your comments. See ya later
I am very fond of ginger, it's great in stews and soups in winter gives them extra zing.
ReplyDeleteMerle..................
Merle
DeleteI agree and I enjoy all the photos you have on your blog of your family meals. I just know you are a delightful cook lots of your dishes are spiced with ginger. Thank you for your suppor during the challenge.
I just bought some ginger yesterday. I put it in the vinegar with the garlic, hot pepper and all that stuff. YUCK!!
ReplyDeleteTerry
DeleteReally? No good, huh. Did it clash with the garlic. I don't know if I ever tried that combo before. Good to be warned. Ha
It didn't clash with it... just all those herbs are pretty strong together. I have been feeling like I am getting a sore throat... the first in probably 5 or more years. The garlic, hot pepper and ginger about burn my throat out. Probably helps though.
DeleteI love ginger. I eat it, drink it... There's something special about ginger. It's instantly recognizable. Have you ever tried Jamaican ginger beer? They call it beer but obviously it's not.
ReplyDeleteThe Blue
DeleteThat's the stuff you buy in the health food store, right? Yes I love that zippy taste and used to buy one every time I went in the store but I had to force myself to stop. That bite really walked up the ole bode, didn't it.
It sure is.... I hope I won't have to force myself to stop.
DeleteI try to bring ginger with me on trips for nausea or stomach upset. I bought a bunch of it during our trip to Southeast Asia.
ReplyDeleteKay
DeleteNow that is a great idea. That is one reason I don't travel anymore because although I love the new foods, my body doesn't agree wth me.
Manzi, I'm a ginger lover too! ;) This is one of my fav spices. Your shelf looks like from a magical shop! Hmm..paralysis of the tongue?? Is it... after talking too much? ))
ReplyDeleteZara
DeleteHahahaha I think so. I know of some people who should keep the paralysis of the tongue and skip the ginger.
Ginger is it! What a great spice/herb for just about everything.
ReplyDeleteJJ
DeleteI agree...... like the spice of life.
I love ginger. Besides its medicinal properties I love the way it smells on tea!
ReplyDeleteD Biswas
DeleteI recently began using ginger in tea and I agree, it's the missing zip.
Even though I thought Ginger was attractive, I'm more a Mary Ann kind of guy.
ReplyDeleteOops, that wasn't what you meant.
Sorry. That's what I get for being away for over a month.
Al
DeleteAre you just making an appearance or are you back? You are missed by everyone, including Ginger. Thanks for commenting
I like ginger. It's great in Asian food - and gingerbread cookies!
ReplyDeleteSherry
DeleteGinger is a snappy flavor..... I agree.
Wow! You've got a LOT of herbs.
ReplyDeleteI usually have a piece of ginger root in the fridge, because a few scrapings of that can really pep up a recipe.
Susan
DeleteMe too. I always keep fresh ginger on hand. The spice of life. Ha
Love my ginger, lemon and honey tea!!
ReplyDeleteHuge congrats with finishing the A-Z challenge! Take care
x
Old Kitty
DeleteUmmm that is the best. Thanks but my butt was dragg'n this year because I was trying to balance the A-Z with all the outdoor spring work.
I'm here to wish you a Happy Mother's Day!! :)
ReplyDeleteRosey
DeleteAnd I sincerely hope your Mother's Day was full of good surprises.

Dear Manzanita, I drink ginger tea when my stomach is upset. I've done that for years and it's a sure cure! Thanks so much for your A-Z month in which you've presented us with herbs. I've learned a lot. Peace.
ReplyDeleteDee
DeleteThanks. It was a fun challenge again. Hope you are feeling better.
Just stopping bye to say..... hi!
