G is For Goji Berries

My theme for the
 A-Z Challenge is
"Aging into Longevity"

 Here is a nutrient-rich
food that is also a
delight to the palate.
In fact, some consider
goji berries the most
nutritious fruit on the
planet. It adds
natural human growth
hormones, makes
us younger and  gives
us back some traits of youth. (Now if I can only remember
what they were). LOL

Recient research indicates that the little red berries also
help protect the eyesight of the elderly.  This perk for
longevity would make the berries a popular staple food.
They are always named in nutrition lectures as taking
the first step toward longevity.

Maybe it's true and maybe it's not but I also like
the taste and I've planted goji plants because they
winter well in cold climates. I cross my fingers
that they grow.

If you buy them dehydrated, they taste better if you re-hydrate them back to life again. Better yet, plant a bush and eat the fresh.

  2. Yet another healthy food of which I was unaware.
Now you know why I'll probably be dead before I can collect Social Security.

When Terry was here, we made some energy bars and put them in with a lot of other goodies and ground them up. Her husband said he picked out the flavor and didn't like it.

I find most things that are really good for you are disgusting. Cod liver oil can save your life and your teeth. TRY THAT.

    2. I take cod liver oil daily in capsule form, so there's no taste. My teeth are falling apart, but I'm otherwise healthy.

You'll have to plant a goji bush when you plant your garden.

Wasn't that cod liver oil the worst tasting stuff ever and then you'd burp it all day. Well, guess what, I'm taking it again and I do believe it's still the best fish oil.

    1. Ruth,
I sent for 3 plants from Amazon. They are small but hopefull they'll survive until I can plant them in the ground. I did put them in larger pots.

  10. I love goji juice mixtures because they add a... tartness? Astringency? Not sure of the term. Lets just say I don't care for really sweet stuff so gojis fit the bill.

I think someone else mentioned purchasing the goji berries in juice at a health food store.

  12. Hmmm, we have a produce market here that sells dried gogi berries. They were okay. I'll give them another try for the eyes.

I think even the dried should be recentlly dried.... if that makes any sense. Most of the dried are pretty stale by the time they hang around in the stores.

I agree that even the "hanging around dried" are OK if they because they still retain the nutrients we want. I've taken some pretty terrible tasting things in the name of good health. Good health is more important than momentary unpleasant taste.

  14. I'd heard that goji berries were a power food and rich in anti-oxidants, but I wasn't aware that they protect vision. Very interesting.

Love the name of your blog, by the way!

  17. I won't be trying these, there was something about them in the papers recently, I don't remember what, maybe people took too many or something, but I remember thinking I'm glad I don't eat them.
