Then I went into the shed and began tossing out with a vengeance. Whoa.... look-eee here. An old wooden phonograph stand. Perfect fit for the phonograph because that's what they were made for. Duh...Manzanita. It had dividers on the bottom where you can stack records and a shelf above that. It's been stored in the shed just about forever and it was something I recall dragging home from an estate sale long ago. You know those items you can't live without!
I dusted up the phono stand and put it in the corner of my study. As I removed the phonograph from the throw-away pile, I kept saying, "Don't do this," but I never listened. Then I salvaged the stack of records and put it all together. WOW....... What a neat find and I didn't even have to leave the house. And here's the best part. I called a church that was having a garage sale and they came with a big truck and took my whole pile.
Here is a very short clip if you would like to hear what it sounds like. It's "Desafinado" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. I like it and dopey me, it was within an eyelash of being on the church truck.
Record players are back in style. You're cool, Mansanita (with or without a record player!)
ReplyDeleteBoth the husband and I got rid of our turntables and hundreds of records very early in our life together. There are some moments now when I wish we had kept one turntable (not his HUGE speakers though) and most of our records. Sigh. Thanks for playing Jobim. I haven't heard him a very long while. His records are among the ones I regret no longer having.
ReplyDeleteWell done you for decluttering!! I'm a natural hoarder (drives everyone who has ever lived with me mad) but I like the memories associated with them. But every so often I do a big de-clutter and it feels great.
ReplyDeleteI'm so so so glad you kept this LP record though - it's lovely!!!! Take care
x
You can collect when you have a place to put it, but in our situation if we aren't using it regularly, most of the time it has to leave. I wish I had just a little bit more room. But, wishing won't make it so.
ReplyDeleteI have a tremendous collection of LPs but nothing nearly so wonderful to play them on! I think you have taken freebies to a whole new level :)

How cool is that? I like it, when light bulbs go on and you see a possibility you never saw before. I have several old records and no turn table. I do plan to change that and get another. They say the sound from an album is superior to CD, more nuanced. I could all too easily become an audiophile. Or something like that.
ReplyDeletePart of decluttering is finding the gems that were buried under all that clutter! I love listening to records. There's a sound that just doesn't come across any other way.
ReplyDeleteTwo triumphs! First you have a good de-clutter then you save something worthy of retention. Great!
ReplyDeleteWe still have many LPs but don't play them.
You are so smart to hang on to it. I stupidly gave mine and all my records away to a charity yard sale.
ReplyDeleteI do remember Desafinado. Brought back memories.
Since you passed on a big pile of items for the church garage sale, you're forgiven for keeping these things, I think. I love that music.
ReplyDeleteOh boy....to me, you have a treasure trove!!! Old records are so a collector's item now, they are coming back en vogue!!! And the sweet sweet music from an old 33 1/3RPM just doesn't get made these days with the 'young singers'.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure glad you stopped by to visit with me, and I'll love coming back often to your home---in blogland.
Kittie Howard,
ReplyDeleteRecord players are back in? OH YEAH.... I knew THAT. Yea right. (smile). Thanks Kittie. Se ya later. Have a great week end.
Su-sieee,
Jobim , so romantic and sexy. I enjoyed your Ella too. Nearly all those records in that picture are dance records.
Old Kitty,
You're right it's the memories and association. De-cluttering feels good after the first shock wave is over!!!!
Sunny,
Room is good but then you fill that with stuff you don't want or need. I'm going to change my ways.... a vow. No more junk. Nice to see you.
Lily,
Hang on to them I guess, everyone says they're coming back... but I don't think they'll go over big with the kids, or the music that I have on mine. Dinosaur music, kids would say. See you later.
Teresa,
Everyone says records are coming back, but can you see a kid carrying a LP around in his ear? Ha Maybe they'll come back for old folksies (like me.... not you) Good week end to you
Karen,
You're right. This LP does sound good and a crummy old needle. Wonders? Thanks for stopping. Have a great week end.
Christine,
ReplyDeleteYou are right... win win and i do feel better to be free of so much baggage. Now to keep it that way! Thanks for stopping. Be by later.
Patti,
Not smart, no. Just an inveterate hoarder of junk. Those old memories are great, except when they remind us of the Lex's. Ha
Jen,
That's so neat that you use your player. Makes me glad I salvaged mine. Thanks for stopping.
Carol,
Ohhh, I think you could be right :) It was so much easier to watch that stuff go out in one big truck than put little stickers on everything. Good weekend coming up.
Hootin' Anni,
Nice of you to come by. It was fun visiting your blog.
Thank you, everyone, for stopping. It's so nice to read the comments. Manzanita
Some things need to be saved and savored. I wish I had kept some of my old 45's and LP's. in fact hubby and I were just talking about that the other day
ReplyDeleteHe gave me a Diana Ross and the Supremes LP for my 17th birthday.
Wish I kept it.
I remember those! Excellent find!

Great Find!!! Don't you just love to find things you forgot you had, especially when they can be used.
ReplyDeleteI am following you (a day late) from Friday Follow Over 40. I would appreciate it if you could stop by and return the favor.
