OK, I've had enough summer. I smelled the roses, planted a bazillion new plants, had the lawn aerated, suffered several bee stings and had sugar ants on the porch. That is it!!!!! I'm ready for wool, goose down, velvet and tweed.
Summer went by fast. I already smell autumn in the early morning air. I haven't even had a chance to wear my "Pretty Woman Dress." Remember the movie, "Pretty Woman," when Julia Roberts went to the polo match wearing that brown polka-dot dress. I found the identical dress on a rack and it fits me perfectly. Only in Montana, we aren't fancy enough for polo and the dress just ain't the rodeo type.
I don't know what's happening up on the mountain. Cody and I were entering the trail head and a big warning sign was stuck in our path. It said there is mountain lion activity and to enter at our own risk. It also gave the rules (ha) to follow if one appears. No thanks. Cody would think it's just a friendly pussy cat and want to play. We have always been aware of bears and mountain lions in the area but this is the first official warning I've seen. Back to walking the fair grounds.
Adios beautiful bloggie friends. Wishing you all the week of your dreams.
Thank goodness they had a sign up! Mountain lions are certainly not something you want to run into when you're just trying to enjoy a walk. We have coyotes here this year, I've never seen them before now.
ReplyDeleteI don't care to see one up close and personal and there nowhere near as scary as mt. lions. :)
I can't agree w/you on the summer weather, I'm lamenting over it slipping away so quickly. It was downright chilly this morning, so much so I thought about digging around for my slippers (in July!).
Really? Did I really make the 'there' 'they're' error...sheesh.
DeleteAnd I forgot to say happy weekend/upcoming week to you too. :)
Rosey,
DeleteI'm so illiterate, I didn't notice. You can write anything on my blog. LOL
Coyotes don't really bother me. They usually just run away. I get a little nervous with wolves, though.
Slippers? hmmmm. I wear sheep-skin slippers all summer. Very sexy, huh?
I don't usually get tired of summer until late August. Right now I'm beginning to just enjoy it! So you didn't buy the dress then?
ReplyDeleteKaren
DeleteUsually I don't either but I've been working especially hard this summer and I think I equate autumn with more relaxing days.
Yes, I bought the dress. It's crying in my closet, and I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to wear it. But ... soon.
"It also gave the rules (ha) to follow if one appears."??????
ReplyDeleteSurely, they don't mean for you to FOLLOW the mountain lion?? I'm thinking that wouldn't be wise.
And I won't call you Shirley, anymore.
By the way, I'm done with summer, too. bring on the cooler temps, falling leaves, and a pool that I don't have to dork with anymore.
Al
DeleteHaha That would be like stalking, wouldn't it? Oh thank you, my name isn't Shirley. But I always thought Shirley Temple was a cute little kid. Ha
You described it perfectly. What I want exactly. So happy not to have a pool since we left Florida. Who needs to soak in chlorine and fluoride? I get enough of that when I shower. The pool boy who works in a bikini was OK, though. Haha
I have lots of posh dresses in my wardrobe with no opportunity to wear them. Maybe we should all meet up for a bloggers dinner and we could give our outfits an airing.
ReplyDeleteMountain lions! That's one warning I've never seen around here, thank goodness. You take care.
Rosalind
DeleteWish we all lived closer. That would be a grand idea. We could all get dressed up once in a while for some special event. It wouldn't have to "be" special but we could make it special by getting together and our dresses would stop crying in the closet.
That was THE dress, the only one I remember from the entire movie, which I have seen more than once. We have bears at our altitude, black bears, but the mountain lions usually stay higher up. Better be safe than sorry, so fairgrounds for a while, I guess. I'm also tired of summer, but we planted our vegetable garden so late, that I better not complain about summer lingering well into October/November here.
ReplyDeleteInger
DeleteShe wore some beautiful evening clothes but that brown polka-dot was so stylish and could be worn anytime.
You be sure to carry "bear spray" too. No bear is ever harmless.
I hope your garden produces before it freezes.
eek! No mountain lions here! Stay safe!
ReplyDeletetm
trm
DeleteI always felt so safe up there, even being along but I guess not. The trail head is 4 blocks from my back door.
Thank you Manzanita. And thank you for the sweet comment you left on my blog today. I had to grab some tissue.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful roses!
Julia
DeleteYou are a dear person. Didn't mean to make you misty.
Thanks.
I always prefer cold weather to hot!!
ReplyDeleteFishducky
DeleteMe too. I don't do hot weather at all.
The heat is a pain
ReplyDeleteLike a bit cooler at my lane
But no friggin snow
That stuff is a pain in the rump at any show
And rules you say
#1 run away
We did turn and hi-tail
DeleteTook the wind from my sail
No walk up the mountain
Or I'd look for a fountain.
It's hotter than blazes
One of weather's worst phases
I wish it would rain
Climate can be a pain
Lovely Manzanita!! Hope you get to wear your lovely dress anyways!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the summer! LOL!! I want it to last that much longer...!
Big wave hello to Cody! Take care
x
Old Kitty
DeleteIt will and I hope you get the perfect weather for your beautiful potted flowers.
Cody says a big wave to Gumtree and Charley and is glad they are little cats and not mountain cats.
I am ready for cooler weather, too. Florida is just too darn HOT.
ReplyDeleteRobin
DeleteI can't deal with hot weather. One reason I could hardly wait to leave Florida
I am NOT finished with summer yet but it sure looks like it is finished with me. I want warm weather longer!!!! We have had a LOT of rain here in good ole Pa....
ReplyDeleteTerry
DeleteIsn't it odd, we are getting all the intense heat and you are getting all the rain. Last summer was the same horrible heat. That is very strange. We never had hot weather for such a long time. Perhaps a week and that is all. And I don't think it's "climate change."
I forgot... those flowers are just beeeeutiful..
ReplyDeleteTerry
DeleteMy roses. I love the roses. Especially the old fashioned ones as they are the only ones that have fragrance.
That sign would do me in. I'd stay to the inhabited areas at least till they take the sign back down. Dogs don't really know when they are out gunned.
ReplyDeleteWe really haven't had summer yet, not a normal one. It has been much cooler than normal. No complaints.
Hope you get your wish.
Patti
DeleteI'm afraid of mountain cats. They are soooo fast. One doesn't have a chance if they decide to attack but mostly they run away. (I think)
Strange that we have had all the heat this summer and you've had cool. Crazy.
Bears and lions you do live life on the edge, we do have spiders and snakes that can kill you but they are not big and pretty shy so you are pretty safe if you don't tread on them and always were gloves int he garden.
ReplyDeleteIf I had that dress I would wear it to the cafe and sit and drink coffee and look pretty every now and again just to stir the neighbour and let them know how great I was
Merle.............
Merle
DeleteThat is a great idea of how to socialize in the dress. I'll probably have to do just that. Haha
Bear and lions are bad neighbors but I don't like spiders and snakes either.
Nope, want summer to stay and stay
ReplyDeleteHoly ghost
DeleteMove to Florida and you'll have it forever and ever.
Karen
ReplyDeleteIt's a great dress. It surely looked great on Julia Roberts, anyway.
I wanna see you wear that dress to the rodeo. You could stop traffic in that dress.
ReplyDeleteI too am ready for summer to be done and fall to start. Can't wait for the roasting of the chilis to start. Then, you know fall is around the corner. As far as the big kitty is concerned,Cody, that ain't no putty tat.
Paige
DeleteI can do a rodeo easily enough as there are rodeos every weekend, except I'm not a great fan of rodeos.
I guess I'm not familiar with roasting of the chilis but it sounds good to me.
If you see a sign warning you of a mountain lion go directly home, do not pass go, do not collect $200!
ReplyDeletejoeh
DeleteWe didn't go up on the mountain..... no way. We walked neighborhoods and looked at the flowers and gardens. Didn't collect the $200 either. Thanks for the good advice.
Shhhhh...
ReplyDeleteI will never get enough summer so long as I live in the Seattle area.
Don't mess with the mountain lions. You can't win.
I once stayed in a campground over night arriving very late only to find warning signs for cougars in the bathrooms in the morning. We were so poor and hadn't traveled in so long that we risked it and stayed one more night. No wonder it was the only open campground in the area!
Jasmine
DeleteCampgrounds seem to attract wild animals and even packs of wild dogs. (The dogs can be very frightening too) I've run up against bob cats (guess they are smaller) in camp grounds in the southern states. They are scary too.
You were taking a chance with cougars and I don't mean the older woman/younger man. Ha
Perhaps conditions have been harsh and the mountain lions are venturing down in search of food for themselves or their cubs.
ReplyDeleteOur Aussie summer is "officially" from December 1 to February 28, but the heat usually drags on all through March and April, sometimes well into May, so that takes care of our Autumn too. I've always had enough of summer by about Christmas time.
Did you get the hat that goes with that dress? And I agree with Merle, wear it to a cafe and sit outside for a coffee or a milkshake.
River
ReplyDeleteIt sounds so odd to us to hear you talk of the heat and Christmas but it was the same to people here living in the Southern states. But I recall when I lived in Florida, we still sent Christmas cards with pictures of snow. Ha
I do have a straw hat almost like the one she wore. I love that style straw hat. Actually the dress is fairly plain and could be worn anywhere, even sitting having coffee. Haha
Humidity sucks and needs to go
ReplyDeleteJohn
DeleteIs it better in Alaska?
I see Texas isn't the only place in need of rain... But all we're getting is stray birds. YIKES on the mountain lions (although they are spotted here occasionally.)
ReplyDeleteI ready for fall... winter, not so much.
Bish
DeleteIt seems like all this pukey weather has upset migration patterns of birds. Poor things. I know how they feel.
I think it's fall for me too, not the snow and ice. No, never really ready for that.
This has been one hot summer for us! I have done a great deal of fishing this season and even the water is hot. I have never seen a mountain lion in the wild (thank God), but I understand it is the one big predator that just might stop his attack and run if you pick up a stick, stand tall, and yell. Of course, most people would probably have a heart attack first.
ReplyDeleteJJ
ReplyDeleteThen one would not be very tall if they are prone on the ground. The instructions on the warning notice said to raise your arms so you do appear taller. Hikers should always carry a gun and don't put it down when nature calls. That is about the time a mountain lion would appear, Haha.
Hot fish, huh? You pull them out of the water already cooked, it sounds like.
Hi Manzanita .. we're having a brief respite before some more heat later in the week ... but would love a little rain here .. the rain blows in north ... still can't complain for some decent weather at last .. and I'd be happy if the cold kept away for a while!
ReplyDeleteGosh .. wild creatures nearby .. yes I think walking around the fair ground sounds more sensible! Cheers Hilary
Hilary
ReplyDeleteIt appears the planet is suffering 2 things, either extreme heat or pouring rain. Perhaps all the heat and water together is making my brain soggy. We all need a breath of fresh air. Other than my complaints, I hope you are finding delight in this world of summer. Much love, my friend.
In Ireland we seem to have gotten the two at once!
DeleteRaindrops the size of your head!! And so hot for Ireland...bring on autumn!
Poke the Rock
DeleteThe size of a head.... WOW.... That would knock me cukooier than I already am.
BEAUTIFUL roses, such a pretty color. Unlike you, I've not had enough summer. Too much of it has seemed like fall...I want summer with bright sun (dark and gloomy again today and more rain), I want more long days and daylight. The thought of shorter, darker, gloomy indoor days makes me grumpy. We've only had maybe 30 days of what I call summer...not enough. Bears...not good, stay safe.
ReplyDeleteSandy
ReplyDeleteI guess Ohio can have it's darker moments. But yes, soon the days will be shorter and when daylight savings time ends, people will again be driving home from work in the dark. My yard..... although I love it, love it, love it..... is driving me a bit crazy because I still have furniture from the ranch to dispose of. When the dark days come, I'll get out my vitamin D lamp and become a famous flamenco choreographer. Or maybe I'll buy a Brothers Project runway sewing machine and become a chic fashion designer or maybe I'll just be a slob in my sweats and wait for spring. Ha.... time will tell.
Thanks for the visit. Hope you and Flat Stanly are doing well.
In Singapore, house cats are the top predators. Mountain lions? Wow.
ReplyDeleteDamyanti
DeletePredators of what? Do you mean .... of people?
Beautiful roses. Thanks for sharing. Love it. Very hot here!
ReplyDeleteNas
Hey Nas
DeleteNice to hear from you. Thanks for dropping by. I think it's hot all over right now. Rain is badly needed.
ALWAYS pay attention to a sign that warns about mountain lions! Glad you did.
ReplyDeleteSusan
DeleteYes and especially with a dog running loose. I wonder what Cody would really do if she saw one.
Good grief! Mountain lions? Yikes. At least we don't have big dangerous animals here in Hawaii. Ummmm... unless you count sharks and big boars in the mountains. Have a great week, Manzanita.
ReplyDeleteKay
DeleteWell I guess you do have big dangerous animals.... Sharks and wild boars are 2 things I would avoid. I think we should stay away from their habitat but that means cutting out my walk with Cody.
You've had enough summer? You're not British, are you? I won't have had too much if it's sunny until November as we have a lot of catching up to do over here.
ReplyDeletePenny
ReplyDeleteNo I live in the mountains in western US and we usually have about a week of hot weather during the summer. For the past 2 years we have had extreme heat during most of the summer. Today promises some relief as the predicted temp is 88. Yay.... cooler weather.
I hope you get your wish and have marvelous weather until Christmas.
Excuse me, I mean Patsy
DeleteHi Manzanita,
ReplyDeleteI think that over here in Britain, we would love the summer to continue. This is the first one we've had in six years.
Still, heat and sunshine, I suppose, can get rather boring. Watch out for mountain lions, doesn't bear thinking about.
Gary :)
Gary
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to wish away your summer. I know you guys have been yearning for a warm, friendly summer for a long time. I need the change of seasons. I intensely disliked living in Florida (I said that because I don't like to use the word hate.) I really love all the seasons.
Always welcome your pleasant puns.
I think you should wear that dress whenever the heck you feel like it. Something that pretty shouldn't go unworn. You'd be the belle of the grocery store!
ReplyDeleteIt's so very cool that your hubby owned the Senators, although I must say, they weren't exactly my favorite team. I remember one game in particular they played against the Orioles. It was the ninth inning, and the O's... MY O's... were leading by three. Senators were at bat, two outs and bases loaded. The Senators put in a pinch hitter, and my father and I were like, "Who's that guy?" After "that guy" smashed a grand slam, we said we'd never forget his name... but of course, I've forgotten it. But I'll never forget that game, because a pinch hit won the game. Da bum didn't even have the decency to hit the ball to where I was sitting in the stands...
Happy weekend!
Susan
DeleteI love all these ideas.... belle of the grocery store or belle of the coffee shop or the soda shop.
Neat that you remember that game. 2 outs and bases loaded..... can't get any more exciting than that. And people say baseball is boring. If Calvin were alive, he'd remember the name of the pinch hitter. He could recall every player of all the leagues. I think he remembered every game.
Could you have caught the ball if it had come your way? I'd duck..... chicken that I am.
I dunno, but I would have liked to try!
DeleteFor us, it will be swimming with gr-kids, enjoying the last weeks of summer before their school starts.
ReplyDeleteSusan
DeleteI just mentioned school starting this morning when I talked to my son. Once we talk about school, you know the snowballs aren't far behind.
Enjoy the swimming with the kids.
Yes, I have to admit that I am more of a winter person as well...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment about bread on my blog. A nice reminder to check the ingredients of the bread I eat.
Julia
DeleteI love warm goose-down jackets. They can also be removed if I get too warm. Haha
I didn't mean to write an epistle on it, I get upset when "they" mess with our wonderful organic food.
I'm just so glad the kids of Tanzania are being fed with healthy wholesome bread.
Funny, I've just said in my blog that I would love to prolong my summer for as much as possible! :)) But I would also gladly join you in the love for wool-velvet-tweed treats! :D My mind is already suggesting me many tempting pictures of all the early autumn pleasures and outdoor funs!
ReplyDeleteMountain lions?! WOW... do they live in your area? I didn't know that! Please, be careful, choose right paths! :)
OMG, gorgeous peach roses! Do you know what the sort is?
