I have 2 favorite Satirists. One is Pat Hatt, author of children's books and a popular blog, "It's Rhyme Time," where he adds daily posts as written through the eyes of his cat. I believe it takes pure genius to satirize and also a vast storehouse of information from which to draw. Pat has a large following of faithful fans and it is from that pool of human frailties that he gleans some of his best material. No subject is sacred as Pat will attack with ridicule the common stupidities that others shy away from. His humorous writings always give an underpinning of moral justice and his animation is entertaining with a message.
Below is Pat's latest video, STUCK, that lends a slightly different tone to his repertoire.

Pat's work reminds me of another Satirist, Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-Head. But it is because of Judge's movie, Idiocracy, that I became a fan of his.
Idiocracy stars one of my favorite actors, Luke Wilson, who wakes up in the future in a world of extremely dumb people after a military experiment-gone-wrong. That makes Luke the smartest man in the world and the most logical candidate for US President. A funny, funny movie but the nagging truth behind it all gave me chills.
I love Satire and Hatt and Judge are two geniuses who can keep me laughing and entertained.
Below is a trailer of Idiocracy.

I like that at the end of the trailer for Idiocracy, the guy who played Chris's dad in Everyone Hates Chris appears!!
ReplyDeleteTake care

DeleteWe must like the same movies. It's relaxing to sit back and be entertained.
I was unable to get my sound to work but there are some beautiful pictures in the first clip.
ReplyDeleteGail
DeleteThanks for commenting. Too bad your sound is on the fritz as the song is lovely and haunting.
haha thanks for the shout
ReplyDeleteGlad I have clout
Idiocracy was a great flick
But yeah many may end up dumb as a brick
Instead of wising up
And not drink fluoride from their cup
Pat
DeleteYes you have clout
Never a doubt
You bring out the best
With some put to the test
You teach as you go
In your own non-fluoride show
Haven't seen Idiocracy. However, having watched the trailer, I agree that the possibility of it happening is not impossible. Or, as you say, the nagging truth gave you chills.

DeleteAt first I had thought it might be too silly for me but I really love Luke Wilson so I could suffer through the silliness. But then something happened, as it does with all satire, the glimmer of "this could actually happen" shone forth and since I live for truths, I watched this movie again and again. I laughed out loud each time I watched because I caught something new and funny.
How have I never heard of that movie? I need to watch it.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes fantasize about what it would be like to be the smartest person on the planet....we would be doomed.
Poke the rock
DeleteYes, I think you'd feel the same as I do about it. Evidently if you went ahead to the time in history where Luke went, you would be the smartest. A very funny movie.
Pat's clip is pretty cool. Thanks for posting it. Like you say, it shows a whole 'nother side to him.
ReplyDelete"Idiocracy" is a hoot. Another one you might like is called "Stupid People", where an ad exec is admitted to a mental hospital, and gets the other patients to help him write "truthful" ads.
Susan
DeletePat is a genius on all counts and beneath all that satire, he has such a good heart.
I've never seen that one. I'll have to check it out. I'm always looking for the "hoot" in life. ha I think you are too.
I often look for your replies to Pat's posts too. They both make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteRosey
ReplyDeleteI always look at yours too. You are pretty funny, yourself. Ha
Hi Manzanita,
ReplyDeleteI just love satire. Can never get enough of it. I like those who satirise those blogfests and blog hops and the alphabet challenge that goes on and on and on and then some more.
Ah yes, Pat in the Hatt
His rhyming cat
Everything's about his sea
Which pleases me
Everything's about his zoo
Of course you knew
Everything's about his bay
That's what I say
I listened to "Stuck"
A chord it struck
Good to see Pat get a mention from you
My lovely friend so kind, so true.
Gary :)
Gary
DeleteI read your post and felt so sad
That your dear Penny was feeling bad
Loyal little pups await and wait
When their dear people leave the gate
Little pups love their chicken.
Four in the morning
DeleteNew day is dawning
Go get my son
Sure he had fun
Penny will rest
Sure it's best
Will soon see her brother
With love she shall smother
Rats, my download speed is normally slow, today it just isn't happening. I do always enjoy his comments and your replies. Both very clever.
ReplyDeleteI will check out that film.
Patti
DeleteI thought the film would be too silly but I enjoyed it because I'm afraid it could come true.
I'm not the smartest person, so Pat Hatt's poems often confuse me, I'm not sure if it's the satire that confuses me or the poetry. Even in school many years ago, I didn't understand poetry. The teacher would be asking, what is the author trying to say and I'd be a complete mental blank.
ReplyDeleteBut I love the movie trailer and now I have to buy the movie so I can see the whole thing.
River
DeleteI did at first, too but then I realized it was satire and there was always a scared cow he was making fun of. Regular poetry isn't my thing either but I love to rhyme. I wish I could add more humor into mine. I understand, a lot of people I know feel as you do about rhyming.
I laughed a lot in that movie. That Luke Wilson is so good.
Pat is one crazy, funny satirist. It takes some thinking to read through his posts!
ReplyDeleteLoved Idiocracy. Feels like we are only a decade or so from there.
Susan
DeletePat usually gives a broad hit in the bottom paragraph. A few times I had no idea but I think that was mostly because of our generational differences. But for his young age, he knows a heap of a lot about various subjects than I ever knew at his age.
I totally agree about Idiocracy. Burrrr
Dear Manzanita, I so enjoyed the two videos as well as the exchange between you and Pat Hatt in the comment/response section. I get to Pat's blog about once a week and so I miss his daily postings and sometimes I'm lost in the midst of the rhyme and yet always I come away with a sense of just how ridiculous life can be and often is. Peace.
ReplyDeleteDee
DeletePat is a great teacher. He shows us the foibles of life that people give credence to. He's a great talent. It's an enlightenment when one can see the ridiculousness of life.
Karen
ReplyDeleteHe seems like he'd be a nice person but I've been wrong before. Ha
Stopping in for a read and I have to say I
ReplyDeleteagree Pat Hatt is a very talented person
who uses rhyme to convey messages or just
poke fun at things in general. I do like the
video. I have it up on my site as well.
Truedessa
DeleteThank you for stopping and the comment. Yes, I agree. I think this video is worthy of wide notice on YT and should rise to the top. (like cream)
Hey Manzi!! Great shout out for Pat! You let him know he is loved... even when he kills us off with worms.
ReplyDeleteWe need to finish our conversation. I have been wondering how things are going for you. Much love!
Terry
DeleteWe'd rather be killed with kindness than worms, huh?
I tried calling but by the time I get going, you are probably outdoors or shopping. :)
I am a huge fan of satire as well Manzy. I am a fan of Patt's blog as you know. I also love The Onion and witty TV shows like "The Colbert Report".
ReplyDeleteKeith
DeleteYay......Your humor really sparkles on Patt's blog. I've watched you be a little shy about it at first and now you're a rhyming star. I always look for your comments. LOL
I love satire as well. That was the first thing they told me when I taught high school years ago NO SATIRE! Maybe, they should take another look at what it means and how effective it is.
ReplyDeleteJJ
DeleteWhy in the heck would they not want satire? I wouldn't think a course in literature would be complete without it. High school was where I really learned to love and understand satire and it's merits. Actually it was 7th grade and this wonderfully wise older lit teacher took me on magical journeys I never knew existed. That man was actually the corner stone for the rest of my education. I am sure you too, helped mold young lives with your teaching.
So funny! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNas
Nas
DeleteThank you. You are always a welcome addition at my posts.
Thanks, Manzanita. I will come back to watch the videos.
ReplyDeleteI do love satire too.
Julia
DeleteHey sweet kiddo. Return and and watch away. I always love your comments.
Lord help us if the premise of that movie ever comes to pass. Sometimes I get annoyed with people who ask me to help them do things that I KNOW they can do themselves if they'd just decide to do it. My husband says a lot of people suffer from laizefatazz. I guess it's pretty debilitating...
ReplyDeleteI think you'll like what I've just posted. Definitely falls under that same category as you've got going here.
Jasmine
DeleteYour husband is a cracker jack observer of life. I love his word laizefatazz. In fact just yesterday, my neighbor and I were talking about close to the same thing. She is so organized and a hard worker. I do appreciate her and was telling her how much I thought her work place people appreciate her. She said she sees a definite difference between the work ethics of our age group and the very young. She said they do the work but seem to lack the joy we should feel when we give our best. I wonder why. Boy, I've been giving my best to my lawn and gardens all summer and for that reason, I don't want to see it end. I'll be by to see you. Sorry I'm so late.
I'm in awe of Pat's talent. The fact that he is as prolific as he is is remarkable. I couldn't keep it up without massive amounts of poetry Viagra.
ReplyDeleteAl
ReplyDeletePoetry viagra...LOL You just did keep it up. Hahaha
Bad Pun. You just did a classic phrase. You're quick kiddo.
Seriously, Pat has talent and is also a wonderful person. I want to see him make "it" really big in his chosen field. I'm convinced he will.
Thanks, Al.
When he does, I'll be honored to say I knew him.
DeleteIn the cyber sense, of course. Not Biblically.
Poetry Viagra is pretty much just alcohol. You can pour yourself a stiff one.
ReplyDeleteMurr
ReplyDeleteThe double entendres are flying high today. Good one Murr.
Gran
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by and adding a comment.
Julia
ReplyDeleteYou are right about that, for sure. If in the wild, animals kill another, it is within the food chain and that is the law of their survival. That too, is hard for me to watch on documentaries, etc, but it has to be. There are not little bowels of kibbles sitting around in the wild. Ha
I mean bowls..... not bowels....That may come later. Ha
DeleteI got this same comment from this person. Isn't it strange? Could it be another Spam?
ReplyDeleteIdiocracy is on the Husband's favorite list. Every now and then he'll say something is just like the movie. Mike Judge's Daria is on my list of favorites. Brilliant writing.
ReplyDeleteSi-sieee
DeleteFunny isn't it that the people and life seems to make that movie look like the norm.
I don't think I've ever visited It's Rhyme Time. I shall have to pop over and investigate :-)
ReplyDeleteRos
DeleteYou like to rhyme. I've read some of your rhymes.
Hi Manzanita .. we had a fabulous satirical programme in the early 60s .. when I was learning about these things That was the Week That Was .. always creased me up! Now I'm slightly kinder .. but do appreciate satire.
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
Hilary
DeleteI recall the name but that is as far as my memory takes me. I thin I still have to reach the kindness state. hahaha
