Milk Delivery. Demonstrations.

 2013  Car

     Midnight at the Oasis. Sing my camel to sleep. This car may look new to you but it reminds me how much I hated milk when I was growing up. They're not building cars for speed these days, that's for sure.
Milk Home Delivery Truck.....1930's and up
How well I remember the old milk delivery trucks. All white, the delivery men dressed in white, just like the color of the bubbly stuff that comes from cows.  Everyone had a little box sitting on their doorstep where they left empties in exchange for bottles of milk. It also held notes to the milkman if they needed butter and eggs.  It sure beat running to the 7-11.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't like to put my 2 cents in this but I wonder if Americans know what they are doing. This weekend a million vets are supposed to march on D.C.  Who is going to clean up after them? Evidently they won't be allowed to clean up after themselves. I just read that a civilian took his lawn mover to the grounds around Lincoln Memorial and began to cut the grass. He was promptly run off by Park Police and 3 cars filled with armed authority. Also, 10,000 truckers are scheduled to circle the D.C. Beltway in protest for 3 days.  ummmmmm
I don't care how peaceful the demonstration, crowds litter. What about porta-potties? I heard the Feds won't allow them. They say due to government shut-down, there is no money for maintenance of public parks. Sooooo what will be the outcome of this? Perhaps a reason for the president/government to seize total power? The president could declare a national emergency and pass an executive order to get dictatorial control in the name of preventing collapse.  Maybe that is what everyone wants. I don't know, beats me.
  1. We live in crazy times. If the president and government did the dictatorial thing, there would be such a revolution. There is an air of dissatisfaction and unrest already. It would not take much for the population to roar and act.
      I agree with you that what you say is the popular expression but in truth, how could that happen. The govt. has been buying and stockpiling for years on our tax dollars. They have been buying bullets...... the kind Americans use in their weapons. The shelves for the hunting rifles are almost always bare. During the cold war, the govt. had storehouses of food, enough for 7 years for every person. Very few people would have food and water if this occurred and the whole idea is to let people face starvation and they surrender. Look at all the sophisticated weaponry the govt. has and the full body protection. What do the people have, garden tools? Americans are too distant from one another and most of them are in favor of giving up their guns now. So as far as a revolution, never happen. The majority of the people voted for what they want and as far as I can see they are getting it.
  2. Love your milk truck memory. We had Isaly and Borden Milk truck deliveries and did have a little insulated silver box by the door. But, I loved milk...still do. The government thing, enough to make someone crazy...don't know how they can not do their jobs and get away with it like that. Republicans don't want to accomplish anything it seems, they just keep wasting tax payers dollar to fight something that's already been law...by a legal vote.......over and over. We get they don't like Obama...move on, get over it, you'll have your turn; but this shutting down the government, people working without being paid is pathetic! I think the marches etc bring the point people aren't happy, but right you are about the mess. Sounds like the man mowing was trying to volunteer his services...idiots to move him away. Wonder how long this will go on.
      Thank you for your comment.
      The republicans definitely seem to be working against their own party. There is such a split within them, so how can they come together and ever get anything accomplished, when they don't even know what they want. The question is, why just the 2 party system? If my memory of history serves me, I think there were 32 parties in Germany during the late 20's and 30's. Jefferson tried to warn against the 2-party system. And you are right. The health care bill is now law. Live with it. Other countries have the socialistic health care and seem to like it. Ask a Canadian. They speak well of their system.
  3. Dear Manzanita,
    Ah the milk memories. And no, I'm not going to milk my comment. Whatever the heck that means. They still deliver milk in Britain. They use little electric vans they call milk floats. I've never seen the milk float, as such.
    We look on in disbelief at the shambles over there. Then again, we have the most evil government I can ever remember in Britain. At least we have more than two choices to who to vote for. Trouble is, they are all crap.
    Universal healthcare, as an added note and mentioned in one of my recent postings, is a right, not a privilege.
    A peaceful weekend to you, eh, as a Canadian might state :)
      Than you Dear Canadian/Brit friend. Thanks for the info. I didn't know any country still delivered milk. I remember many years ago I was in London with a friend from Philadelphia. I don't know why this sticks in my mind, we were walking down a street and there were bottles of milk on the door stoops. She said, "You wouldn't ever see that in Philly. That milk would be snatched up by street people in a second."
      Enjoy your weekend, too.
  4. When I was six years old, the milkman came on a carriage pulled by a horse. I lived in a small town.
    It's hard to believe it. This post brings me memories...
      That is interesting that you had a milk wagon with horses. I recall the ice man had horses because on a hot day we used to follow his wagon and eat the ice chips to cool off. A lot of people had ice boxes then. I'm sure the milk men always had trucks when I was young.
      Those memories are so nice to be awakened. I just now remembered the ice chips and how cooling and good they tasted on a real hot day. Now kids just go to the fridge door and plop cubes in a glass but it was such fun being with all the kids and following the ice wagon.
  5. I didn't like milk either when I grew up. I could smell the cow in the milk. To this day, I still don't like real milk. Give me a glass of Almond milk any day...
    1. You too, huh? I hated milk as a child and we didn't have to drink pasteurized, either. We always had the fresh whole unpasteurized milk but I still hated it. Goat milk is a lot better for you than cows but I agree on the almond milk yummmm.They used to try to disguise the milk so I would drink it. They'd put ovalteen or Hersheys choc. in it and I hated chocolate too. When the adults weren't looking, I'd dump it in the plants. They seemed to like it. Ha
    2. LOL... you are so funny dumping your milk in the plants. They probably got a sugar high from the chocolate syrup.
  7. You Americans are going through some crazy days....I hope things get resolved soon and peacefully.
    What's with the dumb idea of not allowing porta-potties?? Do they imagine people will stay home instead of attending the demonstration?
    I hated milk growing up and still can't drink plain milk. I can manage a milkshake or three in the summer, but it needs lots of flavouring.
      I guess that's the idea, don't want them out and about. Boy, you and me both. I don't want crazy days in my life. I just want to lolly-gag in peace.
      Cows milk is intended for baby calves, I always say, not baby humans.
  8. I'm sure there must be a plan in place to deal with the crowds. After all, even thought the Veterans have been told to stay away, tens of thousands were recently allowed to flood the National Mall to demonstrate for giving illegal aliens citizenship- including thousands of illegal aliens themselves. That seemed to work out all right. I mean Nancy Pelosi thanked Obama personally for opening it up for them while she was at the microphone in front of the whole crowd.
    What you see on TV in not likely to be representative of what people are actually thinking or are capable of. I know I personally have never heard so much outright willingness to speak out against what is going on- and that's while living in a truly liberal bastion. So you never know. I can't underestimate American ingenuity. I can't help it. I still have optimism when it comes to America. I hope I never lose it.
    BTW, we call those weird looking cars toasters on wheels. I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder!
      As far as what is going on, I try not to think about it much. Just once in a while I peek out of my mushroom cave but I'm going back into it now. Ha
  9. Hi Manzi. Hope you are keeping well over there. I love that old milk truck. Perhaps they'll gradually come back! After all everything that is vintage or retro is so popular right now. I never liked milk as a child. I was sick the very first day at school after the milk, and I've never drunk it on its own since! When you think how the crates of milk used to be left in the classroom in the heat of the summer! That certainly wouldn't be allowed now. Take care my friend.
      I hear you still have milk delivery in your neck of the woods. I wonder what kind of vehicles they drive. I like those old milk trucks because the driver was mostly standing. I imagine that was handy with all the jumping in and out of the truck.
      That first day of school would be enough to sour you on milk for a lifetime. (pun intended...ha)
      Thanks for the pleasant comment and I hope things are well at your house.
      We just had good intuition about milk..... always.
      Imagine the litter left from the famous Woodstock.. A bunch of whacked out hippies leaving their calling cards. Hah I think demonstrations have their purpose sometimes but now "they" already know the people are dissatisfied and I'm wary of the outcome right now.
  11. Your comment threat is as interesting as the post itself. I am like Jasmine with regard to these demonstrations. Never underestimate American ingenuity. Most people feel that their "representative" is not representing THEM any longer. It is just a bunch of suits in Washington playing games. So, what else can a society do but peacefully demonstrate? If we don't let the government know we are unhappy now (in a peaceful way) we could lose our rights and freedoms at the hands of people who think that the populace simply doesn't care. We never want to send the message that we are so accepting of ANYTHING that we would just rather let the government run our lives than do it ourselves.
    1. Dear Robin,
      Yes, I do agree with all you say. Throughout history people have always gathered together in protest of something. Especially now with the media, people can sit at home and watch the demonstrations first hand as it was in Egypt and Syria. It lets the whole world know that people are unhappy. But I was kinda more thinking, what happens when the power goes off.
  12. Although there's a milkman that do the daily rounds here, they are totally a rarity! I think they're only saved because they now diversify into delivering other dairy products!
    I'm always horrified by the mess left after a big festival finishes, e.g. Glastonbury music festival - but in their case they have this event where thousands volunteer to pick up the litter and restore the field for the herds of cows to graze on once more! take care
  14. One thing I remember about those bottles of milk delivered in the week hours of the morning: on very cold mornings, by the time we brought the milk in, the cap had popped off the bottle atop a big icky blob of frozen cream. YUK! I've always liked milk, but have only drank skim for a bunch of years. Memories of that frozen blob of cream still gross me out.
    As for what's going on in D.C., that grosses me out, too.
      I forgot about those frozen mornings. Yes, the round cardboard cap would be inches in the air. Some people have the digestion that will support milk and mine did not. I knew it always made me ill from the time I was little but everyone still tried to force it down me. The real strange thing is that my mother never drank milk either and hated it as a child, I was told. But she still tried to put it down my throat. I suppose I inherited her digestive system. If you kids didn't want milk it was OK with me. Saved all those spills at the table too. LOL
I am surprised so many people hate milk I always did, I only have milk in my coffee so I buy very little but I remember the milkman and the postman we also had a vegeman who sole fresh vegetables from a truck and a chicken man all gone now, have to go to the shops for food now oh we had a baker and ice cream van too.
    Your politics are as crazy as ours when are they going to open up shop again.
      There used to be a lot of food-type deliveries but I suppose that was because the women were always home to buy the stuff. Now most women are at work so a delivery person would have slim pickens. I remember the little ice cream truck when my kiddies were small. They would come running in for change when they heard the little tune the truck always made.
      Re politics.... I just want to live in peace and hear the little tune of the ice cream truck again. Ha
  17. Oh I loved the milk man because he never stopped at our house. It was war time and we drank canned milk with a tad of sugar in it. Purely nasty. I use to hang out at friends houses that I knew had real milk and would finagle a dinner invitation so I could get some of the good stuff. Neat memory.
      That is so funny. Getting the good stuff. Well I never thought it was so good. My brother liked his milk, too. He'd go into the fridge (or was it still ice box back then?) and drink out of the bottle. Women hate that but seems like all guys do that. My boys did it too.
  19. Sometimes people have their hearts in the right place but they haven't really considered the repercussions that might go along with their radical actions.
    Masshole Mommy (another blogger if you don't know her) still has a milkman (Boston area). I thought that was cool. :)
    Interesting. I didn't know there was any milk delivery anywhere in the US. I'm not a regular with Masshole but I do know her. If I had stayed at the ranch, I'd like another milk goat. Not to drink the milk but goat butter is absolute heaven.
      I heard a so-called joke that isn't ha ha but it's true.
      A guy washed ashore on an island and natives came out of the bushes with spears. He asked, "Is there government here?" The said, "Yes." He said, "I'm against it."
      It's all political....just a fight between the 2 parties and who suffers? The people. The ones who work and pay their taxes.
