O is for Oregon Grape
A-Z Challenge
My theme is Herbs
O is for Oregon
Grape
Long before
pioneers
travelled the
Oregon
Trail, American
Indians used
Oregon Grape
plant for food
and medicine.
The active ingredient that makes this herb
an effective remedy is an alkaloid called
berberine. This powerful substance is
found in other healing herbs, such as
Goldenseal. It was in the official
pharmacopea until 1950. After WW2
when the chemical companies began
their lofty ascent, most of the herbs
were removed from the
pharmacopea.
Medical Uses:
Helps bile fuction for the liver,
purifies the spleen and blood, useful for
topical skin treatment when made into a
salve.

Yep... I have used Oregon Grape before and I am sure I will use it again. Much love to you...
ReplyDeleteDear Terry
DeleteI like it in a salve and I like the name.... not that the name helps in healing. Ha
You have heard and used most of the herbs, you healthy one, YOU.
As a topical treatment... is it for cuts and scrapes or rashes or something else entirely?

DeleteI don't really know but you know, we always keep a jar of some kind of salve in our medical bag of tricks that has multiple uses. (Whoops, I just dangled a participle but you know what I mean)
I am going to comment on the dancing here rather than on your last post. The dance studio offers Ballroom, Swing, Latin, and more. My plan is to take as many group glasses as I can fit in (probably 3x a week) to try and get a smattering of everything. I am working with an instructor on Hustle, Tango, Waltz, and two more. It all becomes a blur. Anyway, I went last night and it was Waltz and Rumba. In six months or so I might actually KNOW something!

DeleteI'm in a state of delight for you. It's so important to a dancer to know and recognize every dance that is played at social dancing and you can dance every dance. Fun dancing is never having to sit down.
When my partner and I went social dancing we never sat at a table. We stood until the dancing began and danced every single dance. Oh what fun and when you can follow every dance with ease, you'll be the belle of the ball. Dancing Queen.
I haven't heard of Oregon Grape. I instantly think of rain though, whenever I hear the word 'Oregon' mentioned. :)

ReplyDeleteI think of rain when I hear Seattle.... same same.
First time I've heard of this one, salve I've heard of before though.Should be good if it helps the liver
ReplyDeleteSame here. I had no idea.

DeleteI've seen it in formulas but Ive never used it alone.
This looks like an herb that could help me get a couple of my dysfunctions into balance. I read more about how it works on the liver. You're a gold mine, Manzi.
ReplyDeleteSusiee
DeleteLet me know if it helps.
first time I've heard of it

DeleteI guess this one is not very popular.
Right now I am taking Cissus which is from the woody part of a grape vine. Wonder if it is from the Oregon grape? Hoping it will heal my tendon problems.

DeleteI would try to get more infor for you too, but right now I'm falling asleep. I picked up rocks all day (again). I just tooa a long bath and I'm sawing Z's standing up. That injury must be from your fall last winter. My shouldr still feels a little tender too.
One thing about China is that the streets are lined with herbal medicine shops, and are they fascinating. I'd be hard pressed to select anything I recognized in any of them.
ReplyDeleteLoving this theme.

DeleteIve never been to China but it would be so exciting to visit the herb shops.
This is one I've never heard of before. And it's just a shame that herbs have been removed from the pharmacopea!

I haven't heard of this; seems like a good one though if it helps purify the spleen and blood.

DeleteEveryone could use a blood purifier in the spring.
Purify my blood? I may need a truck load
ReplyDeleteHoly Ghost
Deletewould they find something other than blood?
This is one that isn't in my book, I haven't heard of it at all.
ReplyDeleteRiver
DeleteIt's in the mint family. Probably under another name.
Hi Manzanita .. I haven't heard of this .. but if the Indians used it - then there must be some value .. and I'm sure the Library would have reference books referring to it ..
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary

ReplyDeleteI always say the same thing.... if the Indians used it, it's OK with me.
