A statue of my husband at the bb field of the Twin in Minneapolis |
Yipes, today is Dec. 1, my husbands birthday. He was born
103 years ago in Montreal, Canada. The photo above is
of a bronze statue of him at the new ball field in Mpls. It
is such a life-like statue, that for me, it's a little creepy.
Calvin's life was baseball so it is fitting that he now
greets all the Twins fans at the door.
Calvin's life was one of enchantment that he shared
with me for over 25 years. Dec 1....smack-dab in the
middle of Sagittarius astrology and one so lucky to be
born on this date is a laugh and a love a day.
So to Calvin and all you lucky Sadges to be born on this
day, I give you the high-five and say, "Celebrate like only
a Sagittarius knows how."
Calvin Griffith 1911-2000 RIP
Far out, Manzanita!
ReplyDeleteBish
DeleteFar out and a happy December 1 to you, Bish.
That is awesome indeed, maybe you can get some voodoo going and bring it to life haha hey it worked for mannequins in a movie, why not statues. Astrology though, I snicker at that.
ReplyDeletePat
DeleteYou could be on to something there, kiddo. It would be comforting to have a Canadian accent around the house again. LOL
Astrology is going to come and zap you in the bud.
Shades of Pygmalion!!
Deletelol not much accent here, just on a few words. Astrology going to bring Santa and the Easter Bunny along with it? hahaha
DeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteThere are three Sagittarius birthdays in our family. Makes Christmas busy.
Susan
DeleteI do recall that your husband is a Sadge. What a fun and happy life you've had. And Sagittarious always want a celebration on their birthdays too.... that and all the Christmas stuff. Ha
Amazing statue of your Canadian husband. Wonderfully placed. But I can imagine it could be a little spooky.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're selling your Christmas ducks are you? Must too cold for them to be outside.
Blessings and Bear hugs, Manz!
Dear Bear
DeleteSee, I told you, I do like you Canadians. Ha
I gave up on the ducks. They get frozen in the water and I have to chop them out and they fly away. It was 10 below when I got up this morning.
Hi Manzanita .. I'd find it a little spooky - but honoured for him all the same. Congratulations to Calvin for 103 years ... and a statue to celebrate many of those years ... Sagittarius - I mix well with them .. cheers Hilary

DeleteIt's difficult not to get on well with Sagittarius. They are such fun-loving people and have a wonderful happy personality.
Cheers to you, a lovely lady
My brother's birthday is today. December 1. He is VERY Sag. Likes to laugh and love... sounds a lot like your husband, minus the avid interest in baseball.
ReplyDeleteWe are meeting him and his wife in Orlando this afternoon and spending the week together. This is the first time I've spent his birthday with him in MANY years. I'm really looking forward to this vacation.
Happy birthday Calvin!
Robin
DeleteOh how sweet for your family to be together on your brother's birthday and celebrating an early Christmas, too. Another thing the Sadge loves is travel. I'm the home body but when he was alive, I kept a packed bag because I never knew when the wanderlust would overtake him. LOL
Karen
ReplyDeleteYes it really is an honor, especially since he sold the team years ago and the new owner put up this statue after his death.
Very cool. "Happy Birthday" to your man ... Hope you find the day filled with happy memories ... ;))
ReplyDeleteTeresa
DeleteIt's been almost 14 years since Calvin died and memories do fad. Many years his birthday goes by and I never notice. But somehow, I woke up this morning, went to the computer and reallized it was Dec l. That did bring on a rush of memories, so I wrote the post.
Thanks for dropping by. I think of you often.
My goodness, such detail. That had to be some artist. I can see where it would be a bit startling for you however. What an honor though for him to be right there still for every home game
ReplyDeletePatti
DeleteYou are right as that is such a life-like image of him that I really can't look at it. He would have been pleased that the present owners brouht this honor to him. Maybe he knows.
How magnificent. You must be very proud, Manzanita.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful a statue of him in front of a venue where they play a game you love .
ReplyDeleteMerle................
Oh, Manzi, that is such a great tribute to your spouse! I am associating with what your other guests had said! And... Happy Birthday to Mr. Calvin!
ReplyDeleteZara
DeleteThank you. Yes, it really is a wonderful tribute to his years of devotion to the sport but nevertheless, it gives me a lonely feeling. All the fans can go home but he still stands there in the rain or cold. It's like a double-edged sword for me.
My dad was a Sagittarius. They say he was the nicest man you could meet. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty amazing that your husband has a statue. I think it's awesome, but I can see how it could be a bit jarring too. Still awesome though. And I know, I'm repeating myself. ;)
Rosie
DeleteThat's how I feel about most Sagittarius too. My youngest son is a Sadge and he too is the jovial sort and has more friends then I could accumulate in a lifetime.
Thanks Rosie. Yes, for me it's a constant reminder of what a gentle and patient man he was. Well, that was around me but in business, I guess he could get the job done. LOL
Wow! That is quite something. Happy birthday to him.
ReplyDeletePaula
DeleteYes it is an honor to his memory. Thanks for visiting.
Wow!! born the same year as Griffith Stadium. Quite a baseball family.
ReplyDeletejoeh
DeleteWOW..... I didn't know that. So much I now wish I had asked Calvin. Even 25 years together isn't long enough to completely get to know someone. LOL
That's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteRose
DeleteThanks for stopping.
How cool that he is being recognized in that way and what a lovely Dec 1 post for us. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHeidrun
DeleteThank you for stopping by and leaving a nice comment.
That has to be an honor and a bit strange
ReplyDeleteHoly Ghost
DeleteYou hit the double nails. Seeing the statue does make me a little sad.
Wow - what an incredible honour. Happy birthday to your late hubby :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Keith
DeleteYou would have like to talk baseball with him as I know what a bb fan you are. He lived and breathed baseball all his life.
Happy Birthday and RIP to your husband. A lovely tribute.
ReplyDeleteRomance Book
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting and leaving the nice comment.
Happy Birthday to your husband, may he rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteWow. You were married to a man who was important enough to have a statue! I didn't know you were such a wheel.
I'm not worthy, Manzi!
Al
DeleteSometimes life is just a Hallmark Christmas movie, isn't it. LOL You always make me laugh, Al.
Thanks for visiting.
I feel I knew him... through your eyes. I even ate out of his Minnesota Twins Bowl. Can't remember if it was the sweet potato soup or what.
ReplyDeleteRIP Calvin!!!
Terry
DeleteThat is right. We used the Old Stadium dishes for the sweet potato soup. It was delish. Thank you for coming to see me and for being such a good friend and for all the things we shared.
I raise my hat for the both of you.
ReplyDeleteThe Blue Man
DeleteI bet you can't do the polka for an hour to the "Blue Skirt Waltz."
I can't even do the polka for 5 minutes anymore. Ha
Thank you, kind man, for the hat raise and I return the gesture with playful youthful exuberance.
You once mentioned that your hubby used to own a baseball team, but I didn't realize it was the Twins. I can see how you'd have a mixed bag reaction to seeing that statue of him standing at the new stadium, though. In a way, it's a great tribute. On the other hand, YOU knew him as a flesh-and-blood man, but the other people looking at it will see it as just another statue. (If you know what I mean.)
ReplyDeleteNot my birthday yet, but I'm a Sadge, too.
Susan
ReplyDeleteLucky fun-loving you. So it my son's birthday coming up but kinda near the end. He may have some Capricorn sneaking over into his chart. He loves his social time and is constantly hosting parties but now that he is older, he also takes his work very seriously. I'll look on FB to see when yours is.
Yes, a wonderful tribute to him. I only wish he could see it too. LOL
Happy Birthday to your Mister. I always take joy in learning another Sagittarius.
ReplyDeleteYour husband owned the team? Good gosh! What a life you and he had!
