J is For Jive

Jive is the peppy standard of International rhythm dance that would be closest  to American Swing. Jive is somewhat faster with 42-44 bars per minute, while East Coast American Swing is 34-36 bars per minute.

Here is the one dance taken from the American style. American servicemen introduced this form of dance to the English during WW2.  The classical English body lines, that are all such a part of International are not necessary in the Jive. In fact, the dance looks wrong if the couple strives for too much styling.

Jive is the most difficult dance to judge because there are only six fundamental figures and the rest of the dance is quite free.
Below is a video showing you Jive during a competition

Jive is such fun to watch and perform, although now, I could prob. dance it 10 seconds. Ha
I'll bet you dance it as it's your countries dance.

  2. So if it is free does that mean falling down counts for points too? I'd surely win then.

    1. Just kick your feet in the air and wave your arms and it will be part of the dance. LOL But you are #1 today at Pat's.

      Thanks Hilary
Ballroom does get very technical if done correctly. Sometimes I just want to go out dancing, act crazy and have fun. Haha

  6. I watched a couple jiving at a dance once and envied them their ability. I learned later they'd met at a dance when they were in their teens and had been together ever since and went dancing every weekend. No wonder they were so good.

    1. River,
It produces better dancing when there is a long standing partnership. One of my partners I danced with for over 35 years. But I had others too.
      Enjoy your day.

  7. Well I could hop around
    And fall on the ground
    The get back up again
    Eventually at my den
    That could sorta count
Maybe not rate me high in point amount
But at least I'd get rated
And then booted out the exit and gated

  8. Hahahaha Pat
If you have to get booted and gated
Be sure it is fancy and rated
    That way you'll gain fame
    And never be blamed
You'll be asked to come back
And even get paid to do your act.

It's like swing only faster.... not called Jive much in the US...even if there is fast music played, Americans just do a fester swing. There is a slight difference between the two in the placement of the feet.

  10. When I seen Jive, It made me think of the BeeGees singing Jive Talking. Loved the BeeGees.

So tomorrow is K and I am trying to think of what K could be.

They were good. Seems like they were popular yesterday but it was a long time ago. Thats what happens when you get old.

Whatt's spaz? Jive is very much like swing and most Americans know swing.

  12. Me too. I loved this dance. Is it very different from Rock and Roll or isn't that a competition dance?

    1. Rosalind,
Rock and Roll a competition dance? No, not a dance by that name but people swing and do jive to the early rock and roll music.

  14. That's too fast a pace for me and my left feet....if I had more room, I might be ok :)

Perhaps your 2 left feet would like West Coast Swing. That is very slow.... in fact, danced to blues music. Dancers don't jump around all over, helter-skelter. You and partner stay on one line and go back and forth on that line. Couples see that dance done or try it once, they are hooked. Of all the different swing dances, that is absolutely my favorite. I love to teach a group class of WCS because everyone has such a good time while learning it, too

Yes, I laughed out loud at his remark too. He puts out some good ones. Maybe you recall this.....everyone always tries to be 1st at Pat's. I think Hand wad first, as usual and then some asked if 4th counted (perhaps Yeamey. Pat answered something about 4th not counting much. Then a few more comments and John said, "Seven." I don't know why that struck me as being so funny, but it did. Then I imagined everyone just counting off as they comment. He's one funny dude.

  16. Can you imagine how this dance evolved and how it was received!? My mother said she loved going to dances and "kicking up her heels". I can picture her doing this dance, too. Thanks!

    1. She wouldn't be as old as my Mom but they really used to kick up their heels with the Charleston. Mini skirts and all. I loved that look of the 20's. When I was young and during the war, there was a swing type dance they just called boogie woogie and it was that great boogie music. All those dances are based on the basic swing count.

  18. Is that saying you don't dance at all anymore.

  19. Six figures. That explains why there is sooo much leeway on this one in the DWTS competition. The choreographers have a lot of dramatic license when they are putting the routine together. I noticed in the video that you chose that they stuck a bit closer to the Original Six. It was easier to see "the dance."

  20. Hi Manzanita. I have been reading your posts, and I love the theme that you have going here. Jive was very much part of my teenage years in the sixties, and I still love to watch it now.

  21. This looks like so much fun. Wish I could dance like that.

  22. That video as interesting...I never really knew the actual dance of Jive.

  23. Hello human, Manzanita,

Your dance theme is making me want to dance the night away. I once did the Jive with a bunny :) At least I think it was a rabbit, or am I just um splitting 'hares'.
