The Lowly Potato Chip

I love potato chips. It's just the whole combination, the potato, the salt and the oil.  I am fearless, I have real guts in admitting that in this day of "don't eat chips but if you have to. eat baked chips." OMG  Have you ever tasted a baked potato chip? I bet you have in the name of "trying to shed a few pounds." Baked chips are the WORST ...........the very WORST." Yuck, spit it out.

Here is some rambling of a senile old broad. When I was a teenager we ate chips for snacks  BUT the potato was sliced very thin, so thin you could see through it and scattered throughout the chip there were little bubbles of oil. Biting into one sent heavenly bursts of flavor throughout your mouth.  But the best part, no one was fat. NO ONE. The fattest person I ever saw ( and he was a movie star) was Fatty Arbuckle and he would be considered the norm today. We ate what we wanted and never used the word, diet.

Why? Many reasons .......we never had processed food and no GMO's. (Bill Gates hadn't been born yet. No, I won't say it)  No chemicals floating in the air we breath and no trans-fats.  All this stuff makes you FAT.

The Kettle Chips (in top picture) are the best I can find (beside making my own).
Has anyone found a good tasting potato chip recently?  Or have you given them up for good too, like a lot of people.

  1. Hi Manzanita. You're right, Fatty Arbuckle size people are getting to be the norm now, which is not good! I think a lot of it is to do with portion sizes. I just LOVE that photo of you in your header. You look lovely, and, waow, just look at those boots!! I love the kettle chips as well, although over here we call them crisps. You're right, years ago, you never heard of dieting. I guess we all knew exactly what we were eating then, and there weren't all the convenience foods around. Hope you're having a good weekend.

    1. Sorry, I know that and I should have also included the name crisps for our bloggie friends on the other side of the pond. And you're right, no fast food and all the sodas that are available now. Hope you are enjoying Sunday with your family

  2. And, of course, people got exercise. Remember the ole lawn mower??? I do (did I just admit something?) We played outside. No TV till 4:00. Had to walk to school and of course, no fast food. Mom made everything from scratch, so no preservatives, which also lowers the amount of sodium. Portions were allotted, not heaping. Milk/water only an occasional pop...and I do mean occasional. I would get one on Saturday night while watching The Million Dollar Movie. Manz, I'm really glad I grew up back in the good ole days...

    1. turquoisemoon, You are right about walking. I figured out that I used to walk 6 miles just to get to school and back home and if I went some place after school, that was additional miles.Yup, I never had sodas either but only when we started dating in high school, the guy would order one soda with 2 straws and that used to be real romantic. Man always paid too. Ain't that way today, but then many of the women today don't seem to want respect, either. Me too, I liked growing up then but I guess the young people of today like their life too. Probably what we get used to.

  3. Wish it was still like that, sad how so many just think it is the norm to have an ever widening arse. Gave up all processed food at my sea, just not for me. As they taste like crap indeed. Barely anything in them but fake garbage.

    1. Pat, Sometimes I may sound so archaic when I say things were better but I enjoy the electronics of today. It's difficult to enjoy anything if one doesn't feel well from all the adulterated food we have.
Hurray for you for being aware of all those nasty additives to food. There are far too many people who don't believe it or just plain don't care.

  4. Manzi, I have a HUGE weakness for chips. Ruffles, Lays, Pringles, etc. You name it. I can easily eat a whole bag in one sitting!! I have resorted to making sure that they are NOT in my house, for I will eat them on site if they are :)

    1. Keith Oh goodness....I know how that goes. For me, I think it's the salt I crave. I love anything salty and I rarely crave sugar. Do you like other salty food? I can't keep them in the house either or I can eat the whole bag. That bag in the picture is the first chips I've allowed in the house in a long time ..... but they do taste good!!!!!!

  5. Give them up? Hahahaha. The Husband and I have just been better about buying them less often. At least, we no longer go through a huge bag of chips in one sitting. Have you tried the potato chips by Boulder Canyon Natural Foods yet? That or Kettle is what we like to buy. Tim's Potato Chips,if they happen to be on sale.

    1. Su-sieee Ha ha A bag in one sitting... oh tell me about it. I have sworn off so many times and actually walk out to the garbage can with them to get them out of the house. I've never see Boulder Canyon Natural Foods around here but I have tried Tim's and they are good too. When I buy (and I try to stay away from that store aisle) it's usually Kettle. Have you ever tried making them? A bother, but that is so good.

    1. Gail, Thank you for stopping. Well ....fat has become an unkind word and I should have used a different word but I was having a discussion with a girlfriend and we agreed that all ages seem to fight the battle of the bulge. Even those who diligently try are saying the food has basically changed. I just read a book about wheat where the author claims wheat is structurally not the same. Gail, you look great on your profile picture.

  7. Mmmmmm I miss potato chips.... I make my own and they are super good.

I looked at baked chips and do you know the ones I looked at had sugar in them. What the heck is sugar doing in a potato chip.

Have you ever heard of the Paelo Diet. Sometimes called the caveman diet?? I am going to try that diet out. I already eat almost like that anyway.

    1. Terry, I bet your chips are super tasty. If they were not so much work I'd try them again, too but kind of oil do you fry them in? I almost think I got the idea that it is not a slice of potato but a potato mixture that they bake. If so, that is why they put sugar in.

I've not heard of the Paelo Diet. Caveman diet. Sounds like sitting around a campfire chewing on a big bone. But kidding..... tell me more about it. Sounds interesting.

      Did the snow miss you?
      Love from Manzi

  9. I love chips but usually only eat them when out for lunch where they are limited. I think one of the big differences is that when we devoured chips and a Baby Ruth in the day, we also moved. We rode bikes for transportation, actually walked to a neighbor's house instead of driving, games exercised more than our thumbs, dancing was part of dating and swimming actually meant moving in the water, not floating on a cushion slathered in sunscreen.
Hum--- think I will get off my plump behind now and take Mighty Dog for a walk. Thanks.
Great header picture. Obviously chips don't stick to your hips and belly.

    1. Patti, Ha ha ha That is all so true. You nailed it. I always notice people circling the parking lot of a big store, looking for a spot nearer the door. No one actually swims. I never thought about it before. Stick to my hips??? A big sweater and jacket can hide a multitude of pounds. Oh yes, it sticks.
Hope you enjoyed your walk with Mighty. It's colder here today and with a wind so Cody wore her jacket and boots.

  10. I LOVE your blog header pic!! I hope you bought those wonderful boots! Yay!

Crisps!! I love crisps but I do go for the "low fat" kinds - the M&S [Marks and Spencers] low fat salty crisps are moreish and my favourite!

    Take care

    1. Old Kitty, Didn't buy the boots. The heel was around 4 inches. Not practical for all the snow. Ha M&S must be just a UK product. I remember when I used to come to your country, I noticed you had better crisps. Especially the salt and vinegar. I'm always craving salt. Maybe I need a salt block like they have in the pastures for horses and cows. :)

  11. Hi Manzanita .. fat is the norm = very sad ... and dreadfully unhealthy ... we had some crisps occasionally - but we were always outside running around ...

I do love kettle chips - but I don't eat so many .. only on occasions .. plain slightly salted and that's enough - no e flavourings for me ..

I actually think the low fat things are worse for you .. and with the recent food scare we have here - I'm glad i eat simply ...

    Cheers Hilary

    1. Hilary, I don't think people are eating any different but the food is devitalized from all the chemicals and the way it's grown. And "they" admit that genetically altered food does make one put on weight. I eat simply too. I'm cooking on a hot plate now. Really limits what I eat so I eat a lot of raw.

  14. LOVE that pic in your header. I trust you didn't buy those boots? (They'd be lousy for tap dancing.) Most of the chips today are more thick-cut than what they used to be, but there's still a couple that are nice and thin. (and greasy) Utz, which we can only get when we travel up north, and Charles Chips, that used to be delivered to our house in a big can. We put a stop to that, because it was MUCH too dangerous to have those cans in the pantry. However, recently, I saw a smaller version of those cans in one of the grocery stores. I didn't succumb to temptation. Yet. (sigh)

    1. Hey Susan, You are right. People here in the west put on cowboy boots to go out honkey-tonking and I wonder how they dance. I need my ankles free to dance.
I've never heard of either Utz or Charles Chips. Chips can be so regional. Although I do remember friends doing the "fill the big can" thing. I never did or I would never eat food, only chips.
You and will power are not strangers.
Thanks again for steering me to the right comment buttons. It's so much easier to write and find comments.

  15. I love chips but rarely eat them as I get pimples after just one bag. Maybe one bag a year is it for me. And always a small bag. I'm fat anyway, but that's laziness and ice cream more than anything else. I'm doing something about it now though.
I remember being a skinny 9 year old, climbing trees, running around at the beach, home grown and cooked foods without all the preservatives that we have today. Things tasted better then too, because they were whole foods, nothing was reduced fat. I firmly believe that the fat gave flavour and the satisfying full feeling that is missing now so that people just keep eating. Low fat and low salt foods are just so unsatisfying.

    1. River, I love the way you think. That is exactly what I am finding out. I have, all of my life been thin but I've also been very active with my dancing so I never paid much attention to my food. Plus I was macrobiotic for 30 years and that is a perfectly balanced diet. Now that I'm older, I find I put on weight pretty easily. and I'm finding the more I leave fat out of my diet, the more empty calories I crave and eat. Maybe an old dog can learn new tricks but it took a long time.
      Ha Thanks for your opinion.

  17. I never got into the potato chip habit, so I can't help there. But I too do remember that when I was young back in Sweden no one was fat. Now there are lots of fat people even there. Together with McDonalds and all the rest of the fast food places.

    1. Inger, I don't eat potato chips either. I love them but I don't eat them. Mainly because most are unhealthy but I recall the days when we could eat chips and they obviously were not so unhealthy because everyone stayed thin. There are so many things food groups that are ruined for us. I loved soy but wouldn't touch it now, ever because just about all soy is genetically engineered. Or corn.... same thing. It's disgusting.

  19. I love them too but rarely eat them because they are just not all that healthy for one. Oh yes, you can control that with food.

  20. Potato chips have been banned from our house, for health reasons. Last time my husband bought some, I stomped the bag in front of him.

But, oh how I remember goooood potato chips.

    1. Susan, Ha ha ha, you stomped the bag. Did it give you pleasure? I've always wanted to do that. Today's chips are a very poor substitute for yesteryear's chips.
