V is For Vitamins

My theme for the
A-Z Challenge is
Aging into Longevity

When I was on the
Gerson diet a few
years ago, I
began giving myself
Vitamin B12 shots
daily, I noticed
an improvement

in my mental clarity.  Humans get most of their
vitamin B12 from animal products and since I
eat very little meat, my body greatly benefits
from the vitamin B12 shots.

40 % of the eldery seem to be deficient in B12.
Symptoms of a B12 deficiency are low energy,
fatigue, poor memory or auto immune diseases,
and thyroid problems.

We may actually get enough B12 but are not
digesting what we eat. Here I go again, always
reverting to digestion but see how the lack of
probiotics and enzymes and not chewing enough
affects your whole body. It's all connected and
that is why it's called holistic.

Do yourself a favor and ferment a jar of that
yummy, crunchy home-made sauerkraut.  The
commercial stuff is always soggy but you can
find that crunch in your home-made.

  1. Never had a b-12 shot. Had a magnesium shot the other day, but I'll give almost anything a go once at my bay.

    1. Pat,
I suppose you'd have to go through an allopath for the shots and one of their expensive check-ups first. Gerson's clinic is now in Mexico (of course ) and I got my B12 from Mexican doctors. Magnesium shot....ummm....I have trouble with magnesium but I always need it. Will the shots put me in the loo all day like the pills do?
You're so good about health and you'll try almost anything once. You once took the 3 tb.a day of coconut oil, didn't you? That seemed to be popular for a time but not so much anymore. The gal I see in Bozeman put me on that again because her patients have had great results from c. oil for brain fog. I'm now eating the 3 tb of c. oil and also swishing it, thanks to you. This time I'm sticking with it. LOL

    2. Nope, I can just go to the naturopath here and he has all the shots you want. Easy as can be. Magnesium shot hurt where they hit be for a bit, but did nothing otherwise. Just the oil pulling now, no sucking that back as then in the loo I go lol

    3. Have you looked into Magnesium rich foods? Kelp, almonds, cashews, sesame seeds, wheatgerm, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, celery, spinach. Garlic too.

  2. I keep forgetting to take my vitamin pill...shot daily...I don't think so. Is there something else besides sauerkraut?

You can ferment almost any veggie, or is it the sour, vinegary taste you don't like. But if you could get in the habit of eating just a couple tb. of fermented food with each meal (ok, even 1 tb.) it is a much, much greater probiotic than the pills. My girl friend of 55 years lives in Co and we put our veggies in fermentation jars while we skype. That's fun, laughing and re-hashing old memories. I hope no one can hear us. LOL

  3. The energy drinks I consume have the equivalent of one fourth of a B12 shot in them. I won't become deficient!

WOW I had no idea. No fuss or ouch with the needle. That's a big %. I wonder what the drink is. Thanks for the info.

  4. I buy liquid B-12. Just fill up a dropper and hold it under your tongue for thirty seconds. It's also got the rest of the Bs in there. I try to remember to do it daily. The longer I forget, the more I forget... huh. I guess I know why now...

I'm learning all these new things about B12. This one sounds like a breeze. (Now what was that we were doing ?) Haha

  5. My Hemotoligist (sp) has me on B-6. I've never taken B12.

  6. I could've used a big shot of B-12 when I was going through menopause. Something blew in my head that I had trouble thinking of precise words while writing. Not good if that's your job.

Yeah, that sounds like it might be a job for the B's. But you recovered on your own.

Just because I write about the things that help us through aging, as I said, it doesn't mean I consistently do it either. I have a room upstairs with shelves that are lines with herbs and supplements. Trouble is, I forget to take them.
I'd say you are the picture of health.

  9. I take a friend for her B12 shots. Maybe I should bare my butt also. It takes work to age properly.

I just had a flash image of the 2 of you lined up with bared butts wating for your B12 shots. That would be a funny cartoon for Fishducky. Haha

  10. B12 shots daily seems a bit much. I had a whole longer comment here but it disappeared, I must have pushed the wrong button somewhere.
B12 can be poorly assimilated in the body if you don't have enough calcium, or if you have prolonged use of antibiotics or intestinal infections.
It is found in many foods, besides the fermented ones, liver, milk, cheese, egg yolks and most meats, so most people should get enough, but Vegans should take car to be sure they get enough, and like you said, the elderly, who often don't eat a good, varied diet for many reasons.
Kelp is a rich source of B12 too and I have powdered kelp in my kitchen to sprinkle into gravies or spaghetti sauces, sometimes into tuna salad.

Don't you hate that when you write a comment and poof, it's gone. I never recall what I said and have to start all over.

A very worthy comment on B12. So many people don't like to eat liver or the other organ meat. I do love liver; in fact I had liver for lunch yesterday,

  11. I do like homemade sauerkraut! That's one fermented food I've had but didn't even think of while reading your posts before.

I think sauerkraut is the one fermented veggie that most people think of when it mentions fermentation. I tried pickled eggs but they didn't turn out.

  12. Since we are in our 70's, we are really always looking for better ways to stay healthy... We both take a Vit. B-12 supplement... Great advice for people of ALL ages today. Thanks!

Yeah, that ole time sneaks upon all of us and even though it's not our wish, we have to deal with aging and finding the right supplements. Enjoy a new week.

  13. I had a phase where I was very anxious and read that the B vitamins would help. So now every night before bed, my husband gives me my Happy Pill. :)

  15. I know that B vitamins are irreplaceable for nervous system. I took a course but felt nothing special after that. Probably, that was not a right choice of brand or i should take 'em longer than a month. I still believe in B vitamins! Manzi, how much time did it take since you noticed a positive effect?
