Papercuts and Movie Buffs

Papercuts sting. Every time I get one, I think of an old
movie, "36 Hours," starring James Garner and Eva Marie
Saint. It takes place just prior to D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Garner, an intelligence officer is going over the plans in
a briefing when he gets a paper cut. He does the usual,
comments on it, puts the finger to his mouth and goes
on his way to a secret mission in Lisbon.

There, the Nazi's drug him, capture him, take him to a
phony U.S. Military Hospital, work on his body to make
it appear as if he had aged 6 years. When he awakens,
they tell him it is now 1950 (even with dated newspapers),
that they are in Germany and the allies won the war.
They make him believe he's had amnesia all this time.
Of course, all the workers in the hospital set-up, are
German actors for this elaborate ruse in order to get
Garner to divulge the D-Day date.

At first, Garner completely falls for the perfect charade,
especially when he sees his gray hair and advanced-age
vision but THEN he feels the sting of the PAPERCUT
they missed.

Of course, lots of intrigue and action follows.  I never
get tired of watching this movie but why does it always
come on the tube when I'm extremely busy. I suppose
I could somehow tape it for later but I forgot how to do
that so what the heck, I just drop everything and watch
it.
I love movies. Does that mean I don't have a life?
Maybe. If I see a movie advertised at the Cinemark,
a few blocks away, I toss off my apron, (yes I still
wear aprons) stuff a few bucks in my pocket and
get my movie fix for the day.

Anyone else have that habit?

I think you'd like this movie. You were too young or too busy playing football. No kidding.... football is full time work for the kids. I used to think that sports kept kids out of trouble and taught them good sportsmanship. Maybe OK with the good sportsmanship but it never kept my kids out of trouble. lol

  2. haha all because of a paper cut, it's the little things. I'm pretty sure I've seen that one a while ago. I've watched more movies than the average person, so yeah, have a bad habit haha

You probably did see the movie. You amaze me. You are the only young person I know who I can usually talk movies with.... except with the very new ones. There you got me.
Not a bad habit, a good habit. When I was real young, the movies cost ten cents. Even ten cents was hard to come by but we lived beside a lake so we'd comb the public beaches and always find a little money. Haha

  3. I haven't even heard of this movie. BUT, it sounds really good.

    Note to self: watch it.

I used to be more inclined to go to the movies... back when we had a dollar theatre. Even though all the movies were "old" and already had their run at the bigger theatres. Now we don't have one, and I'm too cheap to cough up the money.

This is a good movie but way before your time. But I think you'd like it.
I love those dollar movie theaters. Used to be one near us too. Once that theater showed "Harold and Maude" for something like 2 years but people kept coming.
I never go to a movie in the evening even though I get senior prices. They still cost plenty and I never stop at the concession stand. That fake butter on the pop corn makes me sick. A box of pop corn and a soda cost far more than the price of admission.

    2. The theatre I go to has senior discounts all the time, not just evenings or one day a week, but you have to show your senior card when buying the ticket.

The theater I go to has discount prices during the day so the price is the same as seniors. They only have senior prices in the evening but when I go to a movie in the evening, I fall asleep so I stay home and go to bed. LOL

    4. I have a girl friend who didn't want anyone to know her age so she would pay full price so she didn't have to say "Senior" out loud. Hahaha

Many of you were too young to see it the first time..... not even born yet. I do not recall when it first came out and I've seen different dates..... Some say 1953 and some ads say 1964. I guess "they" don't even know when they made it. LOL

  6. I was crazy about movies when I was in school. I used to save money so that I can watch the first show first day. Now I have changed since most of the movies can be watched on the TV which of course is not as good as watching on a big scree in the movie house. I remember watching SEVEN YEARS ITCH, MCKENNA'S GOLD, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, GOOD BAD AND THE UGLY, HOUSE OF WAX, PSYCHO etc. when I was in school in cinema theaters.

    Very interesting post.

    Best wishes

Yeah, seeing a movie on the first day was important because then you could talk about it. lol
I remember seeing all those movies except "For a few dollars more." I don't know if I'm just living in the past but I seem to prefer seeing the old movies, even if I've seen them a jillion times. Some of the new movies are good and I am going to see the new James Bond movie.......maybe even today.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  7. Hi Manzanita - I certainly haven't seen that movie .. but it intrigues me and I will get to watch it sometime. Goodbye Lenin has a similar story line ... someone is kept believing they are still behind the Iron Curtain as the Berlin Wall hasn't fallen - it's a great movie ... it is tragi-comedy ..
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Bye,_Lenin!
that paper cut - is an interesting concept to bring in .. and boy do they hurt!

    Cheers Hilary

I've never heard of or seen Goodbye Lenin but now I want to see that one. I love movies of history. I'm going to look it up right now.
      Let's enjoy all our movies.
      Thanks.....

  8. Hi Manzanita! I haven't seen that movie; but I LOVE movies. Unfortunately I don't see nearly enough. And I wear aprons every day ~ even tuck one in my suitcase when traveling. Have a great day!

Ahh....movies a momentairly escape from reality. Is that why
we like movies. That may be my reason.
I salute you as another apron wearer. I thought I might be the last apron-wearer on earth. And to also travel with one. You beat me there.

  9. Once, when I didn't have money for the movies, a few friends and I sold a pint of our blood in downtown Norfolk (at a Red Cross blood bank).
We got $7.00, which was enough (at the time) to buy a ticket, popcorn, and a Coke.
That movie with James Garner sounds fantastic. I'm going to check it out.

You were a gutsy young lad or else it was a terribly good movie. Wait..... downtown Norfolk...... Could it have been when you were in the Navy?
I lived in Norfolk during the portion of the war. My dad ship would come into Norfolk. I also recall the sailors called it "sh_ _ City. I didn't think it was that bad. I was in junior high and I saw a young Frank Sinatra perform at the Roxy Theater. Even got his autograph (in my saddle shoes). He was a very young lad with an enormous adams apple. and wore a bow tie. And you left your blood there. Yeah, $7 sure bought a lot back then, huh?

    2. It WAS when I was in the Navy. When I told my mother about it (I felt pretty proud of myself for being so clever), she said I was a "ghoul."
Norfolk really isn't all that bad.
Ironically, my son works in Virginia Beach and lives in downtown Norfolk. Very near the spot (on Granby Street) where the tattoo joints, massage parlors, sailor bars, and porno theaters once were.
Or so I've been told. ;-)

  10. I want to see this movie. It sounds great. My wife and I watch movies every night in bed. We can tell if it's a good movie if we stay awake and don't fall asleep!

I can't watch movies in the evening either because I always fall asleep...... often even in a good movie. LOL
I think you would like that movie.. Hilary suggested the movie Goodbye Lenin. I never saw that one but I'm going to.

  12. For quite a while, nearly every day, the Husband and I would drop everything at 3 p.m. and watch a movie. Munching on popcorn, of course. We stopped when we wore out the DVD machine. We finally got another machine last year, but we have yet to return to our old habit. I must find that James Garner movie.

WOW You even wore out a DVD player. I'm impressed. You two were a couple of "movie buffs, mean on a machine." Or something like that. I bet your pop corn was a lot tastier than that theater pop corn. lol

  14. I've never heard of that movie, but I'll see if I can find it. I like James Garner.
I don't drop everything and head to the cinema often, I usually check what's showing in the weekend papers, then if there is a movie I've been waiting to see, I'll make plans to go on the day it is showing.

Me too. I have to really want to see a certain movie or it is usually just a waste of time/money to pop into a movie and know nothing about it
      Thanks for poping in here.

  15. I still wear an apron too. I just saw some that are designed like superhero women and I thought those were cute. :) I haven't seen the movie you're talking about. I really don't see a lot of (grown-up) movies. We used to go to all the kid movies when they were released. :)

All women are superheros and should wear one of those aprons. When I mess around in the kitchen, I seem to splatter
a lot so I often wear an apron, even over jeans. I don't know, maybe they're just a habit.
Kids don't usually like the adult movies so you'd have to get a sitter for them if you go to a theater so it's cheaper just to go to the kids movies. LOL

  16. Love aprons and have my mother's old aprons but don't wear them because I spend as little time as possible in the kitchen:-) I vaguely remember that movie but now I must look for it on DISH and will dvr it when it is available. Thanks for visiting my blog honoring our military veterans.

  18. Oh I assure you I have that habit. I need my movie fix at least once a day. So they missed the paper cut, did they? I knew they were idiots ;)

Speaking of which... I've often fallen for the perfect charade, if you know what I mean. Does that mean I'm an idiot too?

Ja..... dumeraisles or however you spell it. I've come to realize we have the same habit. I don't walk into any movie without knowing a little about it, though, do you? I'm such a recluse, I like to go to movies alone and not have someone yack'n at me. I pull my coat around my neck, slouch into it (it's usually cold in theaters) and enjoy the movie. But I also love the old movies that I prob already saw 10 times, so at home I often turn on the Movie channel and listen as I do my work and occasionally peek at the tube.
But what's the clue that it's not the perfect charade? NOT more paper cuts. Not the Blue. He can never be an idiot..... just Schultz.

    2. I wear my movie boots just to stay warm, and I rarely walk into a movie when the theater is packed on account of smart phone fetishists who can't keep the darn thing switched off for more than ten minutes.

      How are you today?

  19. It sounds like a great film, but you've given away the entire plot! I know what you mean about paper cuts, though. Ouch.

  20. Dear Manzanita, i never heard of this movie, but the plot sounds intriguing and i am making a note to get the film. Well, i do love movies, too! Though, i am not a frequent movie-goer... we usually watch what's interesting on TV and on DVD. Guess what was my recently watched big screen movie? ...Hotel Transylvania/Monsters go on Vacations! :D
