The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

This movie , The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, was made in 2007 or 8. Many of you must have seen it, as I had, but it was bittersweet to see it again.  It is set in a beautiful farming countryside in Germany during WW2.  Here is an excellent example of what happens when  a young boy and his mother are shielded from the harsh realities of war.

The father is commander of a concentration camp, while the mother living next door to it, believes it to be an internment camp. Their son is lonely and bored but discovers a friend inside the camp's fence, a boy his age wearing striped pajamas.

It's an excellent movie and I won't spoil it for you by revealing more.

  1. I agree with you. It is a wonderful movie. Many times parents "think" they are helping their children by sheltering them from the harshness of the world. It is much better to help the child understand what is going on in the world around them.

So it's always good when people remind me ... thanks for that .. cheers Hilary

  4. I haven't seen this, but then I don't watch a lot of movies. Looks like one I need to be sure to watch.

Heading home tomorrow... finally. Hope you are keeping warm!! Still cold here in Mississippi. My love to you. Terry

  6. Like the commenter above, I don't watch many movies unless I catch one at just the right time on television. Haven't been to the theatre in years. All that popcorn munching is too distracting, as is the guy in the ball cap I usually get in front of me, not him, the inability to see the screen.

  12. Hi Manzanita. That really does sound like a very touching film and i shall try to get a copy from Amazon. Thank you!

  13. A beautiful and powerful movie Manzanita and like you I highly recommend it.

Oh if only the innocence of childhood could stay with us...but along life's way we learn distrust and hatred and are spoiled forever.

  14. Vicki, I DO so agree with you, but I thought about it for some time. If we would be completely honest with kids, it would also tell us what we are doing wrong. How could the father tell his child that he was killing Jews without realizing how terribly wrong it was. Somebody said it in the comments, we should all have the innocence of childhood.

Karen :Besides having this powerful story line, the cinematography (is that the right word) is brilliant.

Hilary : You are most welcome, my dear. I haven't read the book but that would be one I think I should add to my reading list.

  15. turquoisemoon : me too. I kinda pull my sweater up over my eyes and watching through the haze of fabric, kinda takes some of the realism away. I know, sounds cuckoo.

Terry : It's such a powerful movie and the photography is so genius that it should be seen, even though it gives you some sadness, it is a movie that you think about for a long time. It's so rare to find a movie like this.

Oh shoot, that you didn't have much sun. I was hoping you would find a great store house of vit. D. A lot of people wouldn't call our climate warm now..... but it's warming up to the lower 30's and that is hot enough for us. Today I walked Cody (same place) and it was such a nice day that many people were out. (Still spraying though.)

  16. I had not heard of this movie but it is now on my list to see. Thanks Manzanita for the tip!

  17. Kittie, It's better to crunch your own popcorn at home and you don't have a single person in front of you, baseball cap or cowboy hat. They are the worst out here in the wild west and they never take them off. Anywhere, no matter what they're doing. Now my imagination is running away.

Pat : I agree. This was my 3rd time. I think if it came on tonight, I'd watch it again but I might turn it off just before the end.

Optimistic : I think you would like this movie, Keith. Besides the story, I like watching the cars, the furniture and clothes.

Susan : The name of the movie is certainly descriptive of what the movie is about but it wasn't exactly what I expected the first time I saw it. It was so much better, but I guess I'm just being picky. The name is good.

  18. Patrycji : I just couldn't find a place for comments. I'll try facebook. Thank you for your nice comment.

Wendy : I have been a movie buff most of my life. But I do have favorite categories. Thanks for stopping.

Patti : I like movies that I think about for days and days. You are right, this was one of those.

thisisme : This is a good movie but you have been a little blue. Perhaps you should follow it up with "Parental guidance." That was a feel-good movie. Not a whole lot of substance but a lot of truisms about the way the generations raise kids. Maybe the blues left you by now.... I home so.

Anna : You made such an exacting statement and I quoted it above.
Anna, I am tired of wars and killing people and the yucky GMO's in our food. I just want peace.
    Thanks for commenting.

  21. I haven't seen it, but I'd really like to. Although I suspect it doesn't end well.
Seeing things like this make me melancholy. There are people in this country who cannot believe that the Germans did things like this. They think they are, somehow, better than that. There is no way an American could be this way.
I so very much hope they're right. But, I think people are people. And, therefore, are capable of just about anything.

  23. The very definition of heartbreaking.

  24. I have never seen it because movies in general are garbage. However, I will make it a point to see this one. Looks great!

  25. I've heard about this movie, but I never saw it. I'd love to read the book, too, now that I see the movie was based on one.

  26. Teresa : Children are so accepting of all humans. Why can't all adults look at one another with a child's eye?

Gina : Thank you for stopping. I shall return your visit.

Chuck : You and your wife would most likely like this movie. Besides the good storyline, I was excited to look at the 40's dresses the women wore. Your wife may like that too.

Susan : Well, yes, I guess it is but it is such a beautiful story about the innocence of children.

  27. Al : I'm sorry to say that it doesn't end well but it is the type of movie that one remembers long after the popcorn is all gone.

I agree with you that people are people. Often we don't really know the people we put in office.

River : I think you may enjoy this one. I get the idea that you are a movie buff, too.

JJ : I agree but I love movies.... good movies. I watch a lot of the old ones on videos, Did you ever see "Blast from the Past.?" It's a fun movie that younger people don't always understand.

  28. Carol, I have never read the book. Usually the book is better than the movie but I also enjoyed the 40's clothes and cars
