E is For Exercise

My theme for
the A to Z
Challenge is
Aging into Longevity

The more years I
acquired, the more
aware I became of
the need for exercise.
Daily walking, I
found, gave me a
steady feeling of well-being.  If the weather prevented
my daily walk, I felt sluggish with brain fog.

During walks, I begin to vary my pace and often I felt
this urge to break into a run that lasts perhaps, a half a block.
This sounds wimpy to most, but I also haven't run
in years.

I had always done more than a fair amount of
dancing but I never felt that was adequate exercise,
unless of course, I was doing the polka for hours.

Owning a herding dog was also a good motivation to
get outside and walk. I might as well put on my wallking
shoes and leave the house or this dog will drive me
crazy with her restless pacing and whining.  Even
the necessary bending and picking up dog poop is
a great catalyst to get the aging out in the yard.  LOL

  1. Glad to hear you're a pooper scooper, lol. It's annoying when people don't scoop. Ruined one of our most favorite parks to visit here. phft :)

And I agree, exercise does prevent fog brain.

This is just in my own fenced-in yard that I pick up the poop about every 4th day. But then I take her to the fair grounds, where she can run without a leash and toss the frizbe or a ball. After I tire her out a little, we then go for our walk in the park. joeh is right about herding dogs. They love to work and can do it all day.
Geez I too, hate it when people don't pick up their dog poop in public parks. Cody usually (repeat, usually) goes only at home ( I think she's shy...haha) but I still always carry a plastic bag.

  2. If you can keep up with any of the herding dogs, you are doing great!

I toss her ball with a ball thrower (gals can't throw..lol) before we go for the walk or she would go on forever. You are soooo right.

  3. I watched my daughter run a 5K this weekend and thought I should get more exercise.
Then, I had a beer and cheeseburger for lunch and banished that thought from my head.

As I said above to someone, I cheat. First I tire her out somewhat by tossing the frizbe or ball. (but that too wears my arm out...lol) And Then we go for the walk.

I totally agree. After sitting at the computer for hours, both the body and brain seems to cry out for exercise.

  9. I've been sedentary the past three months. Thank goodness Tilda-Hilda is forgiving and encouraging each time I pedal her. It's only "You can do it! Don't give up!" from her.

My posting has been so infrequent that I didn't know you had a new hip. That must be a satisfactory feeling. You were active with the squash and that must be terrific exercise.

Only someone who owns a herding dog understands their zeal for working. When you toss the ball for them, they bring it back with that total expectation of another toss in their eyes. No wonder they call it "the eye." Herding dogs are amazing.

  12. I used to dance several nights a week and line dance several mornings a week before the malls opened plus walking with friends or water exercise. Now with my health I don't do much. I felt like I got a lot of exercise and I loved it. Sure do miss it all.

  13. I need to get out and walk more, I've been doing a lot of sitting. I used to sprint for the bus if I turned a corner and it was right there at the stop, but I've given that up, it hurts way to much for the next few days. I've never been a runner, but used to be able to walk for miles.
I've made a start by getting off the bus two or three stops earlier than I need to and walking the extra distance. I have occasionally walked home from the city or another shopping centre about the same distance as the city but in the other direction. About 5kms I think. It takes about and hour and a half, but I don't notice it if I have the camera with me.

What a good idea to get off the bus a few blocks before your usual stop. I always wonder about drivers at a shopping mall. They will use up gas driving around and around, trying to get a parking place close to the door so it will save them a few steps. I park way in the back so i can walk some extra steps.
