Helena Montana on Starting Kindergarten Sex Education

Last Chance Gulch in Helena Montana

Helena Montana has become a hotbed of controversy over the school board's announcement of a sex education curriculum that would include kindergarten children. It is not a "how to manual" but more general information to protect young children from sexual predators and educate them with an awareness of personal danger.

Montana is no stranger to Liberalism. In 1917, Montana sent the first woman to congress. Jeanette Rankin was elected to two terms for the House of Representatives. This was criticism turned positive for women.

Today I took my little camcorder downtown on Last Chance Gulch. I made the video below. Helena is an anomaly. Many people had an opinion but only three people would go on camera. I had absolutely no idea what they would say or which side of the fence they were from. I am only reporting what was told to me and this is in no way reflecting my personal opinion.

  1. I love that you've taken your video camera with you! My aunt and uncle lived in Montana for years and years and were simply head over heels in love with it. I can see why!

On a different note, I have to say that I agree with teaching young children what is right and wrong in regard to this subject. I am speaking not only for the point of just a citizen but as a former pre-school teacher as well. Bravo to you for writing about it and being the intrepid reporter as well!

  2. Call me old fashioned, Lord knows I've been called a lot worse, but just what responsibility and accountability does a parent have? Being a parent is a verb, not a noun. I think if more parents took their responsibility seriously instead of wishing and hoping or passing it off to someone else, their children would be much better off and be much better little (and big) people, ultimately. Seemingly, being responsible for your own child (or children) is becoming an anomaly. Simply my opinion.

  3. I commend you on your courage to take this very controversial issue and ask the local people's opinion. As a woman growing up in the 40's and 50's, attending Catholic schools, I knew nothing about sex or my body, other than a sense of shame. I do believe the responsibility belongs with the parents, however, in these times, thanks to the media and poor celebrity role models displaying behavior that degrades sex, there are some parents that aren't qualified to teach their children about healthy sex. Perhaps it's time some parents look at their own sexual belief's before teaching children. In closing, it took me years to find my own truth, not the church, not the media, not my friends, only me. I believe sex is the highest expression of love for two people who are committed to each other for the purpose of companionship, survival, and spiritual and personal growth. Thank you again for allowing me to express my reality.

  4. Cannot agree with the decision at all.
I applaud you though for going out on the street and asking. The response was interesting. I wish you could have gotten more who were willing to give an opinion.
Will be driving by Helena later this month. Maybe I can talk my husband into a little side trip to stop and take a look around.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
