Where Is All The Talent?

Rah Cheer. In the grave yard. People take their talents with them. They've spent a lifetime honing a talent and by god, they'll take it to the grave. Imagine their scintillating literary discussions, their juerga's, their ballroom competitions, athletic endeavers, their music, plays and paintings. All the best talent in the world, right here beneath the frozen crust of earth. What if everyone left one protege, one clue to their talent? Could it actually irradicate much of the crime if people's spare hours were taken up with pursuit of their art? What would it cost older creative people to donate a few lessons to eager young students?
I've danced all of my life but the number of birthdays make me see the writing on the wall. (Plus most of my friends are dead and that's a broad hint!) In spite of the fact that I'm as American as Jimmy Cagney, Flamenco has always been my main dance. Not that I've been a star dancer but after hanging in there for 60 years, I've soaked up enough knowledge to inspire some younger women. And I do. I share my Flamenco knowledge with two talented young women and I also freely share my 30 years of ballroom competition with young dancers.

My love for Flamenco was a gift from gypsies who lived outside of Algiceras, Spain during the Korean War. I accepted their friendship and dance instruction and now it's my turn to pass on the gift.

Wanna Buy A Duck....Who's Joe Penner?

Why did I name this blog "Wanna Buy a Duck?" That's easy. All the other names were taken. I spent two days researching names and every idea I came up was stamped "rejected." I figured blog names are usually nonsensical and mostly "catchy." Maybe this is catchy and maybe not.... but I'm finished looking for names and I can talk about Joe Penner. He was a comedian during the '30's and 40's whose one remembered claim to fame was "Do You Wanna Buy A Duck?" Who knows why some phrases catch on with the public ........ like Hubba Hubba ...... which meant a "Hot Babe." I remember Hubba Hubba but Do you Wanna Buy A Duck was a little before my time. (Thank god, something is) .

The video ducks are Montana Ducks. but where they go in the winter (if they all go) is beyond me or even beyond my wondering. I feel really really bad if any of the Montana ducks (or anybody's ducks) go south near the oil spill. That whole episode makes me so sad, I can't even think about it. Maybe our Montana ducks will stay here this winter because they'll find cleaner water than parts of the South. We'll see. But in the meantime we have a whole summer to enjoy our ducks. Maybe they'll learn syncronized swimming, wear little Ester Williams swim caps and start a successful water show and show this sinking economy that original thinking can still support a lucrative home business.

Why Old People are Politically Incorrect

I'll tell you why old people are politically incorrect. You call something by a certain name for 65 years and suddenly everyone starts calling it by another name. OMG. The old name is ingrained. It's a part of our non-thinking vocabulary. It just spills out. After we've blurted out the unaccepted name, we get the shame sign. How could we be so unfeeling to call someone an Indian when they are Native Americans. How can we mix up Oriental and Asian? Oops, did I just call a CD a record? When I say I talked to a gentleman on the phone, everyone knows I'm old. Or when I refer to a lady's "gentleman friend" instead of saying "boyfriend" they know I'm lavender and lace. If I think about what I'm going to say, I can utter the correct words, but it makes conversation "oh, so slow, and no fun at all." I'm getting a little better. I actually used the word "awesome" but I didn't like myself as I said it so I think I'll put that one back where I got it. My "bee's knee's" will still do just fine. It may even come into vogue again. Fat chance.
