E is For Exercise
A dancer has to have strength, balance and agility. Some dances call for a burst of power followed by a sudden stop. It is very much like ballet so the best exercise is ballet barre work, adding spins and turns.
A firm, supple body zooming around the dance floor with control is the one that commands the judges attention.
A daily exercise program is essential but the serious competitor will give some thought to the type of exercise for him/her. When I knew I wanted to compete, I dropped skiing. I asked myself which sport I felt more passionate about and dancing won without a thought. Yes, spills are taken on the dance floor but more serious spills are taken on the mountain.
Walking is a great exercise and I still try to walk 5 miles each day, with el mucho thanks to my dog. Ha

5 miles a day!!!??? Wow...you are such an inspiration...!

DeleteThe dog needs exercise anyway. Never get a herding dog. LOL
5 miles a day...let me convert this...8 KM A DAY!! holy herding dog!
ReplyDeletePoke the rock
ReplyDeleteIt's not difficult to do, it's just time consumming
No, Manzanita! Five miles a day is difficult to do if you're a lazy, unfit person like me. Sigh.

DeleteIt's so weird..... there are days I simply do not want to put myself outside for that walk but I absolutely have to or my day is all a bungled mess. And Cody is whining too.
I need to get more exercise! In the summer it is fine, but winter rolls around and I hole up.
ReplyDeleteThat is why you keep your girlish figure... all that exercise. And NO YOU ARE NOT GETTING FAT!!
Much love to you!!
Terry,
DeleteMy walking poles somehow make it easier. haha I also can use them as a weapon so I feel safer. One has to walk so dang far to lose any weight. See ya later.
My love to you
Five miles... that's a good trek. It gets way to hot in Texas in the summer to walk, at least for me, that's why I do water aerobics 4 days a week and yoga. I love the water. (But you probably figured as much considering where I'm from.) :)
ReplyDeleteBish
DeleteIf you hiked up and down that road in the video, you wouldn't have to exercise for a week. LOL
Walking is great exercise physically and emotionally. I love staying active - keeps me feeling re-charged!
ReplyDeleteKeith
DeleteYou said it. No matter what the weather, I have to have that walk every day but it really cuts into a busy day. Haha
Proud of you walking 5 miles regularly. I use to walk 3.5 miles daily but my neighbor's ill mannered pit bulls took the fun out of it. You are so thought full and a good pet owner to realize that dogs need exercise as much as we do.
ReplyDeletePatti,
Delete3.5 miles is a very good walk. It's just that twice around the fair grounds averages around 5 mi. for me. I took Cody to the groomer yesterday and she got her summer do (all hair cut off). The groomer kept taking that Cody was the perfect weight and just right amount of fat. Wish she could say the same for me. Hahaha
Dancing is one of my most favorite things. After taking a long break from it, I am back at it tonight at a swing class. Fun blog. Glad I found you!

DeleteThank you for stopping and I'm happy to meet a dancer. I'm not surprised when you say your favorite things as dancing gets to be like that in a hurry.
Sure have to stay active or we'll be in the grave that much sooner, bleak I know.
ReplyDeleteJohn
DeleteOMG yes. Nobody ever told me how important exercise would be at this age. If they had, I would have exercised twice as much back than so I'd only have to do half as much now. :)
Dancing does take a lot of energy, and is not for the faint of heart. I'm not walking five miles a day, yet, but I'm working up to something like that. You're very encouraging.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and Bear hugs!

DeleteIt's good to have you up and out sniffing for fresh berries. It's so dry here, I don't know if we'll have any berries. sniff sniff. I like berries too.
5 miles a day you say
ReplyDeleteThat is great at your bay
Wish I could do half a one
Can't even run haha
But yeah exercise is surely needed for all things
If one doesn't want to be a 500 pound dead beat at their wing haha
Nettles might just do the trick
DeleteAnd you'll be stronger than a brick
You'll get up and start the day
Maybe you'll participate in a 10k
You may be my new idol!
ReplyDeleteThanks but that would be a first.
DeleteYou are an amazing woman. I'm working my way up to two miles a day. I agree though that walking is great and something all of us, if we are able, should do every day.
ReplyDeleteinger
DeleteI've been walking mostly on the flat but soon I'll be walking in the mountains. There I huff and puff and can't go very far because it's straight up.
I think it's great that you're staying in shape and, you're right, the dance floor is probably more safe than the slopes :)
ReplyDeleteMark
ReplyDeleteWell, although I walk, I wouldn't exactly say I'm staying in shape. It just the time when everything goes south, exercise or not. LOL
Walking is the best for me at this time. I do dance with my gr-daughters, and they laugh.
ReplyDeleteSusan
DeleteIf I recall correctly, you broke your ankle and I think injuries should have their own time to recover. Granddaughters are the most fun to take dancing.
I found a pedometer yesterday as I cleared my desk to get ready to do my taxes. Hooked it on my waistband this morning. I'm up to .343 miles right now. hahaha. But, it's a start.
ReplyDeleteSu-sieee
DeleteHey, funny you should mention pedometers. I have 2 very simple ones and can't find them since the move. All I can do is simple, just miles and not all that other unnecessary stuff. But what do I find, another one, the complicated one that will pack my lunch and kiss me good-by. I have never figured it out and I'm not interested in learning. ggrrrr
Ah, exercise ... Not my favourite pastime! Saying that I do regularly walk the dogs and use a treadmill.
ReplyDeleteWendy,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I'd rather sit on my butt but I just know its something I have to do. I often wish I also had a treadmill but no room for one and the dog wouldn't get her exercise, unless I somehow made her walk with me. I've seen dogs on treadmills on videos.
You are an excellent reminder that I seriously need to revisit exercise. I have done many variations in my lifetime. If you can walk five miles a day, I can start walking and build up to that. Egads.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to these posts. In fact, I was wondering what you'd come up with for 'E'.' Exercise makes perfect sense. My daughter was a dancer for 15 years and I was absolutely astonished at how strong the girls in her class were. My goodness, if I tried to do one tenth of the stuff they did, I'd end up in traction.
ReplyDeleteI started walking for exercise about three years ago and it was hard going at first but I eventually got up to about 3km a day, then did it twice a day. Then something happened with shin pain, hip pain etc, and now I've got to the point where if I walk too far I can barely move the next day. I can make it around the block a couple of times, or once up the road for about four blocks and home again, but not every day. I'll keep trying though. I should be swimming today, but it takes an hour and a half to get there which is a huge chunk of the day and I have other things that need to get done.
ReplyDeleteSo great that you've kept up with the walking and dancing in your own ways. I am so amazed at the people in my dance club who are ninety plus and just as sharp as tacks- just as you are!
