R is for Rumba

Many times I'm asked, what is my favorite dance. I'm reluctant to say because I really have a fondness for them all. If someone would chain me up and make me tell, it would have to be the rumba. A slow, sensual, love passion lead by the gentleman, followed by a teasing flirtation of the lady.  Rumba is extremely moving when well danced with it's two long drawn out "slows" a quick and then a lightening-speed turn with a stop and hold the stillness of the next beat until you can't squeeze another second out of it.

Rumba is in both the American and International  Latin division with the American rumba being a little faster. American rhythm being 32 to 36 bars per minute while International is 42 - 44.

Rumba is often thought of as the Grandfather of the Latin Dances and it's strong intensity you will long remember when you watch it performed at a high competition level.

A well danced rumba is sensual and just plain WOW.
It's the touching plus the close contact that anticipates touching, the close yearning facial contact and the the fast withdrawal makes the audience breathlessly waiting for the next close contact. It can be unforgettable.

  2. What an exciting dance the Rumba is!!. It looks like you need to be in top form to perform it. If you had any back problems, the Rumba might take care of them.

    Have a GREAT weekend Manzi!!

  3. Hey QT
This dance is way, way up there, on my list. But of course, you have to watch it performed by very accomplished dancers to get the full impact.
You, too, have a fanciful weekend.

  4. All dance, well maybe not the waltz, is meant to be sexy. The Rumba really accomplishes that in spades. Oh for the days when the hips could do that.

A couple can enter in one dance or as many as they want .... up to ten. My partners and I always entered all ten dances. That was known as a ten-dancer. Sometimes I had one partner for the smooth dances and another partner for the Latin division because often a man (or anyone) cannot do both smooth and Latin equally well.

  8. Now, I want to learn about the history of Latin dances. There must've been a lot of scorning and shame-on-you from the Catholic church and royalty in the beginning. Unless, the dances were entertainment at dinners. Or, did most of the dances begin in the New World, away from prying eyes? Interesting.

You got me.... I can trace a little from perhaps the 1920's but I know most of the Latin dances came over from Cuba. I used to trace Flamenco and there is usually such a mix that goes into dances. But I was mostly too busy practicing to really get involved into the roots of the dances. Sorry, kiddo. I'm not any help.

  9. How did I know this would be the Rhumba? Intuitive Bear, I guess.

BTW, did you see my response to your comment on my "Q as in QUEUE FOR EVERYTHING" post? If you didn't, you might want to check it.

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

I saw your comment for Q... Yes I can organize but do you think the crusty old rusty, old dusty, old fusty, old trusty post office clerk will allow. He'l lock us in the post office and we'll all get musty.
      Have a grand weekend, Bear.

  11. I had to watch your video twice. It was so passionate, and their bodies were both so fluid and dramatic all at once. The thought that came to my mind was that they moved like liquid butter... a fluidity of motion... but that wasn't exactly right because their movements were also very precise and *intense* at times. I think it was because it was alternating. One minute it was the sensual liquid feeling and the next minute all passionate intensity and then back again. It is something to watch.

I am always happy to get your input. It's always interesting. Many of the endings are like of rumba are like flamenco where the female turns and walks away in an arrogant manner.

You are so right. Slow enough that it even gives the dancer time to think, if needed. The American rumba is faster and not as sensual.
I'm sure you could master it in no time.

  21. Interesting dance. My favorite dance is corporal expression or you can call it creative movement. There are no classes of it where I live.

I'm not familiar with corporal expression dance but there are so many dances that produce a good workout for the body. Would it be possible to do it on your own, without a teacher, if it's creative dance? Every morning, I do a collage of dances for exercise.

      Thank you for stopping by.

With social dancers it would not look like this, although everyone should keep the basic steps.

  25. Yes, I remember that with the Rumba it is quite difficult to get past the point of looking a bit frantic. It IS so beautiful when done well as your example in the video shows.
